Papers were delivered by scientists and engineers from 15 countries, and the attendees represented 19 c…ountries. As has become the custom at these conferences, the sessions were intense with the coffee breaks and evenings given to informal meetings among the participants. It was a time to renew old friendships, begin new ones, exchange ideas, personally question authors of papers that appeared in the literature since the last conference and find out what was generally happening in Ion Implantation. In recent years it has beome more difficult to get funding to travel to such meetings. To assist the participating authors financial aid was solicited from industry and the Office of Naval Research. We are most grateful for their positive response to our requests. The success of the conference was in part due to their generous contributions. The Program Committee had the unhappy task of the reviewing of more than 170 abstracts. The result of their labors was well worth their effort. Much thanks goes to them for molding the conference into an accurate representation of activities in the field. Behind the scenes in Boulder, local arrangements were handled ably by Graeme Eldridge. The cause of the disease remains unknown, and… no single therapeutic approach has yet been found highly efficacious. Indeed, as the complexity of its effects on brain neuronal systems becomes elucidated, the concept emerges that Alzheimer's disease may be an umbrella term for multiple Alzheimer's-type syndromes that can be differentiated based on etiology (hereditary versus sporadic), neurochemical deficits, and extent of pathology. Whether one or more disease processes is involved, it seems increasingly unlikely that any single drug will provide efficacious relief across the broad spectrum of symptoms reflected in large subject populations. Rational therapeutic approaches may yield long term amelioration of many symptoms in selected groups of patients; and individual symptoms may be ameliorated in larger populations. Multiple approaches may be combined to optimize therapeutic effects. For example, a variety of approaches remain focused on restoration of cholinergic neurodegeneration and enhancing cholinergic neurotransmission, whereas other approaches attempt to retard the of the brain that occurs during Alzheimer's disease. Chapters cover continuous degeneration topics from growth factor secretion of proteases, which could modify amyloid processing, to neuronal gene delivery using viral vectors. The author's treatment is 'classical', i.e., employing classical analysis. He derives many results that are of interest to practical structural engineers, such as optimum designs of structural elements submerged in a flowing fluid (which is of obvious interest in aircraft design, in ship building, in designing turbines, etc.). Optimization with incomplete information concerning the loads (which is the case in a great majority of practical design considerations) is treated thoroughly. More than fifty scientists and practitioners from nine countries presented research papers in one of…the six discussion groups. Many of the papers presented at Nijenrode were of such a high quality that the decision to publish a selection of them was an easy one. At the same time the new series Nijenrode studies in business was initiated. The first task, obtaining approval for a symposium on the industrial applications, now seems a…long time ago. The idea orginated with John Stevens, probably in 1982, from his observation of papers dealing with industrial applications of the Mossbauer effect appearing in the Mossbauer Effect Reference and Data Journal. His initial suggestion for a symposium entitled 'Industrial Applications of the Mossbauer Effect' to be held at a national meeting of the American Chemical Society eventually led to the symposium at the International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies which met in Honolulu, Hawaii in December 1984. This volume is the result of the symposium at the above mentioned Congress, but is not actually the 'proceedings' of the symposium because this volume does not contain all of the over one hundred Mossbauer effect papers that were pre sented at the symposium. Rather it contains a selection of papers that the or ganizing committee for the symposium deemed most appropriate for a volume devoted to industrial applications of the Mossbauer effect. The final volume also contains six chapters that were not a part of the symposium but which are closely related to the topic. There is another difference from many proceedings. 808 pp. Englisch.

Most of science today and in years gone by depends on the experimental observation of struc ture on the small scale with microscopes, and on the large scale with telescopes. The first instruments to expand the observational range of the human eye were simple optical systems, designed in the case of microscopes and telescopes to magnify the image. The big breakthrough in the 17th century was not when Galileo first turned his telescope to the heavens, but when improvements in lens-grinding techniques allowed eyeglass makers to make the first telescope. Early microscopy revealed new and previously unsuspected microstruc tures in biological and non-biological materials and thus helped to enlarge on the understanding of the relationship between structure and properties. The natural inclination of all microscopists, the desire to observe ever smaller structures, was satisfied by the construction of higher quality optical systems which reduced the aberrations limiting the usable magnification. More over, important properties of the extracellular matrix can be modulated by the interdependent actions of tumor cells and fibroblasts. The other major area of interest concerns the response of cells to extracellular signals. Recent work has begun to reveal how a remarkable diversity of cellular functions, including neuronal, proliferative, membrane--cytoskeletal, and many other kinds of re sponses, are elicited through the mediation of a relatively small and interdepen dent set of second messenger systems. These include both changes in cytoplasmic ionic balances and activation of various kinds of protein kinases. Both subjects are covered in this volume. For the first time, physicists, mathematicians, biologists, chemists, economists, and others got toget…her to discuss the relevance of the recent progress in nonlinear classical dynamics for their own research field. Immediately after, pUblication of 'Nonlinear Science Abstracts' started, which, in turn, led to the Physica D Journal and to a rapid increase of the research activity in the whole area with the creation of numerous 'Nonlinear Centers' around the world. During these years great progress has been made in understanding the qualitative behavior of classical dynamical systems and now we can appreciate the beautiful complexity and variety of their motion. Meanwhile, an increasing number of scientists began to wonder whether and how such beautiful structures would persist in quantum motion. Indeed, mainly integrable systems have been previously con sidered by Quantum Mechanics and therefore the problem is open how to describe the qualitative behavior of systems whose classical limit is non-integrable. Attention has been focused, for the most part, upon morphological issues and clinical matters. Although useful, this approach has many shortcomings…. The true cytoidentity of primary neoplastic cells was not established by these methods, nor could their clonal nature be recognized. The more overt changes in immunological function, such as monoclonal gammopathies and immunodeficiencies, were appre ciated as important components of these diseases. However, subtle immunological perturbations were not recognized. Furthermore, associations were not established between the lymphoreticular neoplasms on the one hand and both primary and secondary immunological abnormalities on the other. There has been considerable recent progress in the fields of immunobiology, cytology, and immunochemistry. These new approaches have proved readily applicable to studies on the lymphomas. The term 'lymphoma' has been applied to a heterogeneous group of neo plasms that involve lymphoid tissues. This term is not altogether satisfactory, since it implies that cells of primarily the lymphoid series are involved in the neoplastic process. Some neoplasms, heretofore classified as 'lymphomas,' now appear, from the results of penetrating analysis using newer methodology, to be malignan cies of the macrophage series, rather than of the lymphocytic series. These neo plasms include Hodgkin's disease and a minority of neoplasms previously referred to as 'histiocytic' lymphomas. The majority of these 'histiocytic' lymphomas are now known to be lymphoid malignancies involving the B-cell series. 784 pp. Englisch.

L. ) held in Copenhagen, Denmark (1977), the senio…r editor approached the international delegates at the business meeting for approval of the concept of holding the First International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology at Sidney (near Victoria) British Columbia on May 1-4, 1979. The S. I. L. agreed to sponsor such a meeting, and this sponsorship in turn led to the provision of space and technical facilities at the Institute of Ocean Sciences Patricia Bay, the Pacific Regional headquarters of the Ocean and Aquatic Sciences component of the federal Fisheri~s and Oceans Department. The National Research Council of Canada provided travel support for a number of non-Canadian participants. Invitations were sent to as many active workers in the field as the senior editor could name, and in addition two representatives of closely allied fields were invited - Dr. V. Standen who works with closely related but terrestrial species, and Dr. J. Grassle who works with polychaetes but especially with Capitella capitata which is much like an oligochaete in some aspects of its biolog- so much so that the senior editor in his salad days succumbed to some ill-founded advice and described Capitella as a new marine tubificid! Evidence is available that intercellular channels are essential for electrical synchronization in excitable tissues and for the diffusion of molecules from cell to cell. This process of cell-to-cell communication is so reliable that it was pre served throughout the evolutionary scale. As evolution generates diversity it is not surprising that gap junctions are not the same in all systems. It is known, for 2 instance, that junctional permeability is reduced by high free [Ca +]j in some cells or by a fall in pHi in others, or enhanced by cAMP. Our knowledge of the physiological modulators of junctional permeability is still scanty. Moreover, the compartmentalization of the intracellular milieu represents an additional complication in the interpretation of many studies of cell-to-cell communication. We are thus challenged by, as Bernard Issacs used to call it, 'the survival of the unfittest,' as well as the oPtimistic approach of 'bringing life to years,' as John F. Kennedy said. The fact is that we, as a society, tend to confuse 'treatment' and 'cure' (and 'prevention').
