Thus, an understanding of the…interactions between polymers and between a polymer and a rigid counterface can enhance the applications of polymers under various environments. In meet ing this need, polymer tribology has evolved to deal with friction, lubrication and wear of polymeric materials and to answer some of the problems related to polymer-polymer interactions or oolymer rigid body interactions. The purpose of this first International Symposium was to introduce advances in studies of polymer friction and wear, especially in Britain and the U.S.S.R. Most earlier studies of the Fifties were stimulated by the growth of rubber tire industries. Continuous research through the Sixties has broadened the base to include other polymers such as nylon, polyolefins, and poly tetra fluoroethylene, or PTFE. However, much of this work was published in engineering or physics journals and rarely in chemistry journals; presumably, the latter have always considered the work to be too applied or too irrelevant. Not until recent years have chemists started to discover words such as tribo-chemistry or mechano chemistry and gradually become aware of an indispensable role in this field of polymer tribology. An attempt is made to survey this field, but primary consideration is given tothreeprob lems under investigation in the Polymer Structure… Labaratory of the Institue of High-Molecular Compounds, Academy of Seiences ofthe USSR. The first problern is the genetic coding of the biologically fun.ctional structure of proteins. Its solution is based on physical theories of hydrophobic interactions. The second problern is the conformational properties of pro teins as the factor governing enzyme activity. The most direct methods for experimental investigation of questions in this area are optical, principally those involving natural and magnetic rota tion of the plane of polarization. A substantial portion of the book concerns optical activity; the Faraday effect is discussed in an appendix. The third problern is the manifestation of the cooperative properties of enzymes in the kinetics of enzymatic reactions and the solution of complex kinetic problems. This problern is espe cially pressing in connection with research on allosteric enzymes, which are responsible for feedback in metabolic processes. An appendix describes a new method for solving kinetic problems, based on the theory of graphs. This volume extends and details certain of the ideas ex pressed in my previous book, Molecules and Life: An Introduction to Molecular Biophysics, which was published in this series in 1965. 208 pp. Englisch.

The present book was written by E. G. Rozantsev, one of… the pioneers in this field and a prominent specialist on stable radicals at the Division of Chemical and Biological Processes of the Institute of Chemical Physics, Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His numerous papers have contributed greatly to the present situation, wherein nitroxyl radicals have acquired unusually wide popularity, including the fields of biology, medicine, chemis try, physics, biophysics, and instrument construction. A clear illustration of the astonishingly vigorous development of this new field of chemistry can be given by the enormous flow of information on the synthesis and use of nitroxyl radicals. There is no doubt that this monograph, which in part generalizes the results of many workers studying these radicals, will be received with interest by specialists working in this field. ' Naturally, investigations of the effects of radiation on semiconductors cannot be considered in isolation. Thus, for example, the problern of 'radiation de fects' is part of the generalproblern of crystal lattice defects and the influence of such defects on the processes occurring in semi conductors. The same is true of photoelectric and similar phe nomena where the action of the radiation is only the start of a complex chain of nonequilibrium electronprocesses. Nevertheless, particularly from the point of view of the experimental physicist, the radiation effects discussed in the present book have inter esting features: several types of radiation may produce the same resul t (for example, ionization by photons and by charged particles) or one type of radiation may produce several effects (ionization and radiation -defect formation). The aim of the author was to consider the most typical prob lems. The subjects discussed differ widely from one another in the extent to which they have been investigated. 240 pp. Englisch.
