Previous conferences in 1981, Co…penhagen, and 1989, Guelph, had indicated widespread interest in this group of pathogenic bacteria and the timing of the Edinburgh conference was prompted by the major advances in our knowledge of the HAP group that had occurred in the five years since the Guelph meeting. These organisms are considered as a group because of their close relationship in an evolutionary sense and because of the similarities in the types of diseases that they preduce. The main objectives of the meeting were to review and discuss current knowledge and present experimental findings relating to the fundamental, applied, clinical, and therapeutic aspects of disease research involving the HAP group of organisms. HAP 94 was attended by 160 delegates from around the world and included many of the foremost researchers studying HAP organisms. The conference was structured around 16 talks from invited speakers who covered key areas of HAP research including taxonomy, mechanisms of pathogenesis, animal disease models, virulence factors, molecular biology, immunolgy, antigen analyses, and experimental and commercial vaccine development. The talks provided a review of the current state of research in each field and allowed each speaker to focus on his or her personal research interests.

In addition, the volume includes a chapter on taxonomy, as the importance of good taxonomy is often not fully appreciated; on sporulation, since so many important products are produced concomitantly with this process and we are beginning to understand the mechanisms by which the process is controlled; and, finally, on the cell envelope, as we are only just beginning to appreciate the significance of dif ferences between the cell walls of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria for productivity and processing. The commercial importance of Bacillus lies mainly in the area of enzyme pro duction for the food, drink, and detergent markets. Increasingly, however, the ability of Bacillus to secrete proteins, coupled with its regulatory acceptability, has resulted in strenuous efforts to develop species of Bacillus as hosts for the produc tion of value-added heterologous proteins. Difficulties have often been encoun tered, indicating a need to divert more resources to improving our understanding of the molecular biology of members of this grou p. Experience with Escherichia coli, a far from ideal organism from a commercial point of view, suggests that an in creased investment in Bacillus is likely ultimately to be productive.

The spontaneous formation of well-organized structures out of microscopic system components and their interactions is one of the most fascinating and challenging phenomena for scientists to understand. Biological systems may also exhibit organized structures emanating from interactions of cells and their networks. For instance, underlying structures in the brain emerge as certain mental states, the ability to coordinate movement, or pathologies such as tremor or epileptic seizures. When we try to explain or understand these extremely complex biological phenomena, it is natural to ask whether analogous processes of self-organization may be found in much simpler systems of the inanimate world. In recent decades, it has become increasingly evident that there exist numerous examples in physical and chemical systems in which well-organized spatio-temporal structures arise out of disordered states. As in living organisms, the functioning of these systems can be maintained only by a flux of energy (and matter) through them. Synergetics combines elements from physics and mathematics to explain how a diversity of systems obey the same basic principles.
