Paul Wakeman, son of the paper scholar and proprietor of the Plough Press Geoffrey Wakeman, was recruited by John Randle at the Whittington Press in 1986 when the Oxford University Press was in the process of discarding its Monotype equipment and installing computers. With his help Randle ferried car-loads of printing machinery to Whittington. He did not know then that Paul was keeping this diary - it has only recently come to light. Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. Café-au-lait wrappers. 400 copies printed, by Smith Settle. Cover decoration by Eric Ravilious. "I can't help regretting the amount of time AJ spent on the minutiae of bibliography," writes Julian Symons, author of A.J.A. Symons: his life and speculations (1950). "He made his own elaborate defence of it (see page 86 of my biography [on which the author quotes an example of what he calls his brother's ingenious special pleading]), but it does not convince me and perhaps did not convince him. Bibliography followed as an end in itself is surely a Mecca for little minds, not those that range widely like his." George Ramsden, author of an enthralling bibliography of the poet Christopher Logue, has another end in this well-illustrated 101-item catalogue. He celebrates the life of an entrepreneurial book collector who died untimely, nine days after his 41st birthday. The books and manuscripts Ramsden offers for sale include a series of early letters from Symons to a correspondent unknown to his brother, Alan Instrell, a mass of First Edition Club publications and ephemera, and books inscribed by Symons to Max Beerbohm, Tancred Borenius, Oliver Brett and Maundy Gregory. Not in Walsdorf & Allen.…
