Hubbed spine bears six raised bands, and a leather burgundy label stamped in gilt lettering. All edges sprinkled red. Attractive antiquarian bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. xii, 782pp., plus 2 pages of ads. Covers and spine are moderately rubbed. Two inch crack along front outer joint at the foot, and inner hinges are starting, yet boards are very firmly affixed and the binding is absolutely solid. Previous owner's name neatly penned inside the front cover in contemporary dipped ink. Pages are in stunning condition. Mild discoloration occasionally throughout, but overall, leaves are bright white and clean. No writing within text body. A wonderfully preserved volume of writings and sermons. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "William Fleetwood, (1656-1723), was an English preacher, Bishop of St. Asaph and Bishop of Ely, remembered by economists and statisticians for constructing a price index in his Chronicon Preciosum of 1707. He received his education at Eton and at King's College, Cambridge. Fleetwood was regarded as the best preacher of his time. He was accurate in learning, and effective in delivery, and his character stood deservedly high in general estimation. In episcopal administration he far excelled most of his contemporaries. First edition thus. Henry Baker (1698-1774) made his name as a teacher of the deaf, but he is also known to history for other reasons: he was son-in-law to Daniel Defoe, having married Sophia Defoe in 1729, and he also wrote poetry and literary prose, and popular science. The Universal Spectator to whose first number Defoe himself contributed was a weekly essay periodical begun in 1728, and he kept writing for it until 1733. There had been a previous selection published in 1736, in two volumes; this greatly expanded selection is the next edition. It contains numerous poetical interludes, as well as stories, moral essays and other commentary on contemporary life. Provenance. Contemporary inscription on each title page 'M. Deskfoord'. This must be Lady Mary Ogilvy (1720-95), daughter of the Duke of Atholl, who married James, Earl of Findlater. From her marriage in 1747 until her husband succeeded to his father's title in 1764 they were known as Lord and Lady Deskford. The family lived at Banff Castle, Aberdeenshire. …

Extremities show superficial scuffs, and light surface cracks to the leather of the spine, some chipping to the head, and tail (spine). Internally, some foxing chiefly confined to the endpapers, text-block remains remarkably bright, clean, and unmarked with sound binding. All three volumes were published in the same year (1728), with Volumes I & II being of the Sixth Edition, and Volume III being of the Second Edition. Overall, good+. Engraved frontispiece included in the pagination, engraved title vignette, these two by Bickham, and 52 fine half-page engraved illustrations by Cole, for the prologue and epilogue, and each of the fables; occasional minor browning or spotting. Neatly bound in modern calf-backed patterned boards. First edition, with the last page stating "The End of the First Volume," but no more was published. Daniel Bellamy was active in educating the young throughout his life, writing dialogues and plays some of which were specifically aimed at the girls in his wife s boarding school. In another of his works he wrote "Children are like precious Diamonds. . . the more valuable the Jewel, the more Art and judgment is requisite to make it shine in its full Lustre." The present work gives the texts in parallel columns, made much more accessible by the wonderful Cole engravings. This book is rare, with ESTC locating copies at the British Library, Bodleian, Cambridge, National Library of Scotland, Illinois, and UCLA.…
