Aggiungi al carrellovery good dust-jacket, very good light blue cloth, cover a bit soiled and lightly warped, text appears little used if at all. BRENDEL, DAVID H. Healing psychiatry: bridging the science/humanism divide. Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press, 2006, 1st printing number line ending in 1, xxii, 178pp., . Series: Basic bioethics "Psychiatry tod…ay is torn by opposing sensibilities. Is it primarily a science of brain functioning or primarily an art of understanding the human mind in its social and cultural context? Competing conceptions of mental illness as amenable to scientific explanation or as deeply complex and beyond the reach of empirical study have left the field conceptually divided between science and humanism. In Healing Psychiatry David Brendel takes a novel approach to this stubborn problem. Drawing on the classical American pragmatism of Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, and John Dewey, as well as contemporary work of pragmatic bioethicists, Brendel proposes a "clinical pragmatism" that synthesizes scientific and humanistic approaches to mental health care. Psychiatry, he argues, must integrate scientific and humanistic models by emphasizing the practical, pluralistic, participatory, and provisional aspects of clinical diagnosis and treatment. Psychiatrists need to have the skill and flexibility to use scientific and humanistic approaches in a collaborative, open-ended clinical process; they must recognize the complexity of human suffering even as they strive for scientific rigor. This is the only way, he writes, that psychiatry can heal its conceptual rift and the emotional wounds of its patients." - CONTENTS: Science and Humanism in Psychiatry -- A Pragmatic Approach to Psychiatry -- Pragmatism in Action: Clinical Cases -- Pragmatism and the Mind/Body Problem -- Sigmund Freud: Scientist and Pragmatist -- Pragmatism in Neurology and Psychiatry -- Pragmatism in Psychiatric Diagnosis -- Pragmatism and the Future of Psychiatry. 9780262025942 ISBN 0262025949.

Trade Paperback. Condizione: Used - Good. From the Gothic to the contemporary, glass has transformed thestructural, formal, and philosophical principles of architecture. In The GlassState, Annette Fierro views the many meanings of transparency in architecture.Specifically, she analyzes the transparent monumental buildings that w…ere built inParis between 1981 and 1998 as part of Francois Mitterrand's program of GrandsProjets. The Grands Projets provide a rare opportunity to study a finite set ofbuildings constructed of similar materials, in the same time period, in a specificurban landscape, and with related ideological missions.Fierro employs a 'discourseof the detail,' in which the smallest architectural detail manifests the political, theoretical, and urban contexts of the building's design and construction. Sheexamines the paradox of the most pared down architectural configurations being usedto support the most complex meanings. Intrinsic to Mitterrand's glass buildings inParis, for example, is a political concept: the metaphor of accessibility as a meansof breaking open cultural institutions previously closed to the public. In additionto the structures of the Grands Projets -- the Institut du Monde Arabe, the Grandeand Petite Pyramides du Louvre, the glass greenhouses at utopian park projects at LaVillette and Andre Citro?n and the Bibliotheque nationale de France -- Fierrodiscusses the Fondation Cartier and two precedent structures, the Centre GeorgesPompidou and the Eiffel Tower. A study of the technological, theoretical, and cultural significance of the transparency of the glass structures of Francois Mitterrand's Grands Projets in Paris. shelf wear on bottom edge.

Hardcover. Condizione: Used - Very Good. If you're interested in Plato, you're reading the wrong book. If you'reinterested in difficult childhoods, sexual misadventures, aesthetics, culturalhistory, and the reasons that a club sandwich and other meals--includingbreakfast--have remained in the memory of the present writer, keep r…eading.--fromFeelings Are Facts In this memoir, dancer, choreographer, and filmmaker YvonneRainer traces her personal and artistic coming of age. Feelings Are Facts (the titlecomes from a dictum by Rainer's one-time psychotherapist) uses diary entries, letters, program notes, excerpts from film scripts, snapshots, and film frameenlargements to present a vivid portrait of an extraordinary artist and woman inpostwar America.Rainer tells of a California childhood in which she was farmed outby her parents to foster families and orphanages, of sexual and intellectualinitiations in San Francisco and Berkeley, and of artistic discoveries andaccomplishments in the New York City dance world. Rainer studied with Martha Graham(and heard Graham declare, 'when you accept yourself as a woman, you will haveturn-out'--that is, achieve proper ballet position) and Merce Cunningham in the late1950s and early 1960s, cofounded the Judson Dance Theater in 1962 (dancing withTrisha Brown, Steve Paxton, David Gordon, and Lucinda Childs), hobnobbed with NewYork artists including Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Morris (her lover and partner forseveral years), and Yoko Ono, and became involved with feminist and anti-war causesin the 1970s and 1980s. Rainer writes about how she constructed herdances--including The Mind Is a Muscle and its famous section, Trio A, as well asthe recent After Many a Summer Dies the Swan--and about turning from dance to filmand back to dance. And she writes about meeting her longtime partner Martha Geverand discovering the pleasures of domestic life. The mosaic-like construction ofFeelings Are Facts recalls the composition-by-juxtaposition of Rainer's work in filmand dance, displaying prismatic variations from what she calls her 'reckless past'for our amazement and appreciation. Memoir by the avant-garde dancer, choreographer, and filmmaker recounting her childhood years, sexual misadventures, and artistic explorations. wrapped in complimentary Brodart dust jacket protector. Book is signed by previous owner. Book is out of square.

"The body as an object of critical study dominates disciplines across the humanities to such an extent that a new discipline has emerged: body criticism. In Get…ting Under the Skin, Bernadette Wegenstein traces contemporary body discourse in philosophy and cultural studies to its roots in twentieth-century thought - showing how psychoanalysis, phenomenology, cognitive science, and feminist theory contributed to a new body concept - and studies the millenial body in performance art, popular culture, new media arts, and architecture." - CONTENTS: Making room for the body -- Body performances from 1960s wounds 1990s extensions -- How faces have become obsolete -- The medium is the body. 9780262232470 ISBN 0262232472.
