Dolphin left Plymouth on 21st August 1766, under the command of Captain Samuel Wallis , under orders to cross the Atlantic, negotiate the Straits of Magellam and explore the Southern Pacific to look for the as yet undiscovered Southern Continent, 'Terra Australis'. The ship's Master was George Robertson, who kept a detailed journal of the voyage. In June 1767 the Dolphin found themselves off Tahiti, which Wallis named King George's Island.
