Fine, unclipped dust jacket in a combination of transparent acetate and paper faced flaps allowing the attractive binding to show through. 1973 Reissue in photo-lithograph of the 1955 Folio Society edition, beautifully illustrated with wood engravings by the Irish artist and author Robert John Gibbings (1889-1958). In lovely condition with no interior or exterior markings, inscriptions or book plates. Al corners sharp and binding tight and firm. Note:The frigate H.M.S. Dolphin left Plymouth on 21st August 1766, under the command of Captain Samuel Wallis , under orders to cross the Atlantic, negotiate the Straits of Magellam and explore the Southern Pacific to look for the as yet undiscovered Southern Continent, 'Terra Australis'. The ship's Master was George Robertson, who kept a detailed journal of the voyage. In June 1767 the Dolphin found themselves off Tahiti, which Wallis named King George's Island. Robertson's journal gives a lively and detailed account of the month the Dolphin's crew spent at Tahiti and of the topography and interactions with the islanders.
