Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. In 1941, in response to a warning by four of Britain's codebreakers that their efforts to break the Enigma code were being hampered by lack of funds, Winston Churchill ordered that they be given everything they need. He marked his minutes of the decision with the words "action this day". This book includes edited lectures by some of Britain's foremost historians, former codebreakers and academics, and tells the full history of Bletchley Park, the codebreaking base. The contributors trace the legacy of Bletchley, from the groundbreaking work which lead to the breaking of Enigma and other wartime codes, to the invention of modern computing, and its influence on Cold War codebreaking. The book also includes the human stories and personal reminiscences of former codebreakers who worked at Bletchley. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Aggiungi al carrello(Subject: Intelligence, Espionage, Reconnaissance & Electronic Warfare) In 1941 Britain stood alone against the unstoppable Nazi war machine. British and Polish codebreakers at Bletchley Park had broken the German Enigma cipher, but their staff and resources were small. In October 1941, leading codebreakers, including the outstanding Alan Turing, wrote to Winston Churchill asking for help. He ordered that they be given all they needed, adding the instruction: 'Action This Day'. It was to be a key turning point - their brilliant work is believed to have shortened WWII by up to two years. The authors, leading authorities on the work of Bletchley Park, have assembled a number of key writers to explain its importance in the history of codebreaking and the birth of today's computer age. Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. The brilliant work carried out by British codebreakers based at Bletchley Park is now believed to have shortened the duration of World War II by up to two years. But during the dark days of 1941, as Britain stood almost alone against the apparently unstoppable tide of the Nazi war machine, this remarkable achievement seemed a million miles away. With the help of their Polish counterparts, the British codebreakers had broken the German Enigma machine cipher. But the resources on which they could call were so small that it seemed their achievements would be in vain. Without the necessary manpower, they would never be able to take full advantage of their ability to break the German codes and ciphers. In October 1941, four of the leading codebreakers, including the outstanding Alan Turing, wrote a letter to Winston Churchill asking for help. Reminding him that on a recent visit to Bletchley Park he had praised their work, they told him that it was being held up and in some cases not being done at all, principally because we cannot get sufficient staff to deal with it. 2001, First edition, first printing. A near fine copy only marked by age tanning of the pages. The d/w is unclipped and also near fine. Scans available if required.
