The excitingly innovative Art Deco style which took Europe and North America by storm in the late 1920s and 1930s combined the techniques of creative d…esign with those of industrial mass production. Nowhere was this more successful than in the field of tableware, where renowned designers and artists could display their talents in everyday items such as dinner, tea and coffee sets, jugs, bowls and vases. ART DECO TABLEWARE combines descriptions of the factories with information on the wider design and social background, and provides a widely-researched and detailed survey of the tablewares produced by British potteries during 1925-39. The output of about 100 factories, including Wedgwood, Doulton, Poole, Shelley, Newport, and A.E. Gray, and many less well-known ones such as E. Brain/Foley, Barker Brothers, Burgess and Leigh, and Paragon, is covered, together with the work done for them by designers such as Clarice Cliff, Susie Cooper; Charlotte Rhead and Keith Murray. Novelty wares and kitsch, such as Carlton Ware and Crown Devon, and nursery wares, are also described. Historical notes are provided on the more important firms; the name, location, and any trade name used as part of the backstamp are given throughout.
