These letters, together with Lucien's replies to his father, provide a vivid picture of the career of one of the leading Impressionist painters. Pissarro writes about the progress of his paintings, his problems with dealers and with his health, his own ideas on Impressionism and on the characters and work of his fellow artists such as Gauguin, Renoir, Monet, Degas and C?zanne. The letters offer a lively first-hand account of late nineteenth-century France: of civil disturbance, the Dreyfuss affair, Emile Zola and the politics of the literary and artistic establishment which was slow to come to terms with Impressionism. To the artist, though, the letters are still more valuable: they reveal the theories and methods of a master. Pissarro's views on art, expressed to a son who was also a painter, throw light on the ideas and aspira-tions of the whole Impressionist mo.
