Karl Gerstner ha lavorato nel campo della grafica, della tipografia e della fotografia. Svolge il suo apprendistato come grafico per poi partecipare a corsi di fotografia alla Kunstgewerbeschule di Zurigo. Nel 1949 fonda il proprio studio di grafica e inizia a lavorare su commissione per Ciba-Geigy. Qui conosce Markus Kutter, con il quale nel 1959 fonda l'agenzia pubblicitaria Gerstner + Kutter che annoverava tra i propri clienti Citroën, Krupp, Holzäpfel KG, Schwitter AG e Bech Electronic Centre. Nel 1962 entra a farne parte anche Paul Gredinger. L'agenzia, nota con la sigla GGK (Gerstner, Gredinger, Kutter), diventa negli anni successivi una delle agenzie pubblicitarie di maggior successo in Svizzera, con filiali in Europa e negli Stati Uniti.
