Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. First Edition. The great spread of canals thoughout the country in the 18th century threw up a need for general reference works for waterway users and investors. Baldwin in his monograph on Canal Books writes that Phillips was the best of these, providing for about a fifth of this book a good general account of canal development throughout the world and for the remainder much detail of 'domestic navigations'. Pasted to front free endpaper is a large fold-out map of England which has been neatly, when viewed from the front, repaired with paper tape because of a long tear. It also has some curling to those edges that tuck into the hinge. The map is hand coloured with the rivers, county boundaries and canals of England and Wales picked out. Tables, and 4 plates of canal architecture at rear. Several library stamps. Full contemporary leather, rebacked in simple style with general wear and a few nicks and chips. There are new front endpapers. Occasional foxing throughout, heavier on early and late pages including the plates. Ow very good.
