Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. No Jacket. 1955. Second American Edition, 250pp. Fine in G+, lightly worn slipcase. Limited to 1000 copies, this number 886. In 1922, after his adventures with the Arabs in their revolt against the Turks, chronicled in his book, SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM, Lawrence had enlisted in the R.A.F. under the name John Hume Ross. He was dismissed in 1923, when his true identity was discovered, but he was allowed to re-enter two and a half years later, using the name Shaw, under which name he had served in the Tank Corps during the interim. Many people believe that Lawrence's life was one of the strangest and most adventurous in modern times.

Aggiungi al carrelloSecond US edition, limited issue, number 24 of 1,000 copies, issued simultaneously with the first British edition. This was preceded only by the 1936 edition of 50 copies intended to establish copyright: only ten of these were offered for sale at the prohibitive price of $500,000. "One of Lawrence's avowed purposes in joining the RAF was to write of the ranks from the inside. He began immediately making notes when he enlisted in 1922. With his dismissal in January 1923, because of unfavourable publicity, the project was set aside, not to be taken up again until he was posted to India in 1927 In March 1928 he sent a clean copy of the revised text to Edward Garnett [who] had copies typed which were circulated to a small circle, among them Air Marshal Trenchard Trenchard's concerned response led Lawrence to guarantee that it would not be published at least until 1950" (O'Brien). In 1936 the manuscript found its way to America and "in order to control publication, it was found necessary to have a copyright edition published". Based on a late revision by Lawrence, the present version was set up by Jonathan Cape in 1948, but not published until after the death of an officer mentioned unfavourably in the text. A 1955 review of the American issue found that "in The Mint, the brutalities of noncoms, the indifference of officers, the rude comradeship and intellectual sterility of barracks life are set down with hard fidelity." (Time) O'Brien 168. "Books: The Hero as Rookie", Time, 21 March 1955. Octavo. Original blue buckram, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, endpapers and top edge yellow. Housed in original blue card slipcase with paper label. Signature of one Martin Tordash(?) to front pastedown. Slipcase shows signs of handling, with a few chips and tears: a fine copy.
