Howard Fast (1914 2003) a noted American writer, provides a gripping eye witness account of the violence; these attacks and their aftermath are conside…red a milestone in the civil rights movement. The concerts were organized as a benefit for the Civil Rights Congress, and featured African American singer Paul Robeson. Robeson was known for his strong pro-trade union stance, Communist affiliation and civil rights activism. Shortly after the attacks strong public outrage was expressed; people condemned the attacks as well as the failure of NY Governor Dewey and the police to protect citizens. Despite this condemnation the mainstream press and local officials blamed the victims of the violence for bringing it upon themselves. 8 1/2 x 11, 24pp, 8 pp b&w photographic illustrations.
