Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Gut. 118 p., ill. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly bleached and rubbed jacket, annotations and markings in text, otherwise good. / Leicht verblichener und beriebener Umschlag, Anmerkungen und Markierungen im Text, sonst gut. - From 1860 until 1865 James Clerk Maxwell was Professor of Natural Philosophy at King's College, London, and there produced some of his most significant work, in particular the two classic papers in which he first put forward the concept of the electromagnetic theory of light. The six lectures here printed, which should appeal widely to teachers and students of physics, commemorate his work at King's College. They divide into two groups. In the first, Sir John Randall provides a general background description of Maxwell's life and work, R. E. Peierls surveys developments in electromagnetic field theory since Maxwell, and C. A. Coulson discusses four basic questions facing Maxwell in the sphere of intermolecular forces and how they have since been answered. The three lectures in the second group are devoted to fields of research which, though intimately connected with electromagnetic radiation and thus ultimately deriving from Maxwell's investigations, have only been developed in recent years, Sir Edward Appleton writes on radio and the ionosphere, E. G. Bowen on radio astronomy and giant telescopes, and R. A. Smith on the principles underlying the interaction of radiation with matter, the construction of masers and lasers, and the generation of coherent beams of light. Sir Edward Appleton, pioneer of ionospheric research, was one of the most influential scientists in an era which saw radio and television become commonplace features of everyday life. As Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research throughout the Second World War, he exemplified the new breed of scientific administrator produced by the impact of science on Government. And as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh he later held a key post during the post-war decades of educational expansion and change. He was also, and perhaps above all else, a very human Yorkshireman. In writing Sir Edward's life, Ronald dark has not only been given access to his personal papers but has been able to utilise much other material which has not previously been available. He has therefore been able to draw a rounded portrait of the man who won his way to Cambridge before the First World War; who after service in the Army joined Rutherford's Cavendish Laboratory; and who in a classic series of experiments pinpointed the height of the Heaviside layer and then discovered the higher Appleton layer as it was soon called. His biographer deals with his influence on Service as well as civilian science during the Second World War, and on his preparation of the D.S.I.R. for its post-war tasks. A full account is also given of his later years at Edinburgh and his handling of the George Square controversy.
