A handsome set of Cowper's poems printed by the famous printers C. and C. Whittingham of Chiswick, with illustrations by Richard Westall. Charles Whittingham (1767 - 1840) was an English printer. In 1789 he set up a small printing press in a garret off Fleet Street, London, with a loan obtained from the type-founding firm of William Caslon, and, by 1797, his business had so increased that he was enabled to move into larger premises. Whittingham inaugurated the idea of printing cheap, handy editions of standard authors, and, on the bookselling trade threatening not to sell his productions, took a room at a coffee house and sold them by auction himself. In 1809 he started a paper-pulp factory at Chiswick, near London, and in 1811 founded the Chiswick Press.

Main pages foxed, but otherwise unmarked, and binding tight. Very good condition overall. Three volumes of Cowper's peoms in pretty 19th-century leather bindings with marbled edges and endpapers. Each volume measures approx. 6.5" x 4.1".

A charming, well-bound set.

The first two volumes contain an engraved vignette title page and a regular title page, the last volume has a vignet title page and without a regular title page but does have another engraved vignette title page following the the publisher's advertisement which states.that his some of his poems thatt were supposed to be included here fell out of favor with the public than was expected. are included here but the rejected piece, though they might deserve insertion in a biographical memoir, as illustative of the Author's characture, did not, for the most part, appear to the editor appear worthy of permantlly occupying a place among the production of the Poet. The translations are ommitted for other reasons. An exception has, however, been made in favour of the elegant versions of Vincent Bourne's Poems, of which the entire collection will be found in the present volume. Cowper's minor poems are contained in part two. Each poem within these volumes have their own engraved vignette title pages. Some light foxing or toning only to the preliminary leaves or title pages, bound in contemporary polished calf decorated in bline, rasied bands, compartments decorated in gilt, red morocco spine labels gilt, , all edges marbled, Vol. I with a chipping to spine ends, Vol. II with chipping to foot and tiny chip to label. Vol. III no chipping but all joints lightly rubbed and can become a bit fragile but still quite nice. Each volume with the armorial bookplate of The Right Hon. Earl of Moray.
