Aggiungi al carrelloPrinted broadside, 14 1/2 x 10 inches, caption title followed by 19 paragraphs of dense text printed in four columns on the upper half of the sheet, the proposed group's constitution of three articles and a section of "by-laws and working plan," also printed in four columns, on the lower half. Sawdon advertised in a 1910 "International Socialist Review" for this Tennessee co-operative project, wrote a letter to the editor of "The To-Morrow Magazine" concerning the project in 1908, and donated a dollar for Soviet relief in 1922; we've have found no other information about him. Apparently unrecorded on OCLC, which does locate four other Sawdon publications, the first in three copies, the others in one: "A Practical Co-Operative System" (Chattanooga, TN, ca. 1910; broadside); "Use Natural Law" (California-Berkeley; printed in San Francisco, 1905; 39 pp.), "The New Social System or the Correct Basis of Economics and Ethics" (Wisconsin-Milwaukee; NP, ca. 1900-1910, 53 pp.), and "Best and Now" (Wisconsin Historical Society; printed in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, 1932; 4-page leaflet). Poor quality paper browned, but very good. Folded. Documenting an attempt to start a co-operative farming community in the southeast, this broadside by Sawdon describes a community based on the principle that Time is the correct measure for determining work and pay, "the only real worth (exchange-worth) of any article is the average labor that is required to produce and deliver it. Were money based on labor, this alone would revolutionize society, and be the greatest labor-saving invention of any, for it would abolish poverty and war." Summing up his pitch to prospective partners in the effort (in "A Practical Co-Operative System"): "Wanted -- Socialist, anarchist, agnostic, fruitarian pards, affinities who believe in justice, liberty, reason, who are not addicted to strong drink nor tobacco, and only workers at physical work will receive full pay, for mental work will be done for pastime . to build up splendid home in the beautiful southeast. To plant orchards, raise gardens, hay, and farm products; get teams, cows, small cannery, etc., and study and prepare to live the very best, the easiest. Good living the one object." The "Constitution" of three articles, outlining the Justice Association's purpose, its provision for land and labor sharing, and the member's responsibilities as a lease holder, by-laws that include definition of terms and codes of conduct, and prospects for the project's growth is printed on the lower half of the broadside. Apparently there were not enough takers for the project, as we have found no evidence that any such community founded by Sawdon was ever created. …

Aggiungi al carrello77 Vols., folio, numerous illustrations throughout, first 6 volumes bound in orig. publishers cloth, re-backed, the rest bound in half hard grain morocco, spines lettered in gilt, some light rubbing but a very nice usable set. A complete run cover the nineteenth-century of this highly important and influential architectural periodical. Originally published as a weekly magazine from 31 December 1842 onward, complete runs such as this are extremely rare. Each volume is illustrated large woodcut illustrations showing newly designed buildings by the major architects of the time. "The most informative and influential works in the field of architecture. incomparable in the scope and range of their coverage, and they form an extraordinary record of aesthetic and cultural progress not only in the United Kingdom but around the world. yet the wealth of architectural information in The Builder. still lies buried in the weekly descriptive reports on literally thousands of buildings that include churches, schools, hospitals, town halls, libraries, market halls, office blocks, factories, private houses, court houses, hotels, workhouses, monuments, public baths, exhibitions halls, clubs, and even cemetery monuments, public parks, and engineering structures. These articles do not appear to have ever been methodically examined or presented in a digital format in a manner that can be easily used by historians, architects, artists, heritage planners, conservation officers, community heritage groups, students, restoration consultants or anyone in the related fields of research or in the building trades."Robert G. Hill.…
