Black and white wood engraving prepared for The Illustrated London News (trimmed) 16.7 x 27.7cms (including caption and margins), a few marginal spots, unrelated text on the verso, the image in very good condition. Dramatic image of an incident on the Canton (now Pearl) River near Guangzhou, between a Chinese galley and a British vessel from H.M.S. Amethyst, during the Second Opium War (1857-1859).

Five works in one volume, small 8vo, pp. 24; [iv], iv, ii, 71, [3]; [ii], ii, [3]-66; [ii], 25; xvi; all with separate collation and pagination; and all with sepate titles except the last; rebound in modern calf-backed marbled boards. First edition of all five pieces. Robert Richardson was a schoolmaster at Whitby, where the local printer, William Forth, printed his poems. These four little volumes were all printed and published in 1837: they were all, it seems designed to be bound and sold together, although composed and printed separately. In fact, the first part of the volume may have been composed last, as it contains poems on the death of William IV (20 June), whereas the preface to the second part is dated to April of the same year; and the final part, Richardson's Essay, is dated 20 May. All these little volumes are rare: there is a set at the British Library, and also one or two titles at York Minster and the University of Leicester, but there are no other locations in Copac. This example of the second edition clearly remained in the stock of the Homeland Association for some time, as a label has been affixed to page iii, announcing a price increase of its publications from 1st January 1918.
