Antonie Sabatier [1742-1817] French essayist and poet. Sabatier left the seminary to dedicate himself to a literary career. A protege of Helvetius, Sabatier published the poetical work "Le Tempe de la Volupte" (1762) and "Quart d'heure d'un joyeaux solitude" (1766) and the novel "Bizarreries Du Destin" (1769). He first published the above work in 1772 in the hopes of providing a history of French literature. However, Sabatier was criticized for his "affectation and excess moral zeal" when dealing with the works of certain French writers; especially the philosophers such as Voltaire and Diderot. Despite the criticism and the publication of a work directly attacking it; Sabatier's work went into several editions, reaching a fifth edition by 1781.

Der Verfasser war kein Kleriker, er war, im Gegenteil - wegen seiner Vorliebe für zeitgenössische Literatur - aus dem Seminar geworfen worden und ließ sich als junger und mittelloser Autor von Helvétius sponsorn. Nachdem er von Voltaire und Jean Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert, die er verehrte, jedoch abgewiesen worden war und obendrein die Gunst und Unterstützung des Philosophen verloren hatte, landete er in gegenaufklärerischen und reaktionären Kreisen. Seine hier vorliegende Literaturgeschiche in Form eines Autorenlexikons verkaufte sich bestens und erfuhr zahlreiche Auflagen, führte jedoch zu einem anhaltenden Skandal, da er die besten Schriftsteller seiner Zeit darin - angeblich aus Neid und Mißgunst - abqualifizierte, besonders jedoch Voltaire und die übrigen Aufklärer und Freigeister. Seine Bedeutung hat das Werk jedoch auch noch heute, da es wegen der zahlreichen Biographien die darin auch von unbedeutenderen Autoren gegeben werden eine wichtige Quelle für das literarische Frankreich der beginnenden Neuzeit ist.
