By Alvin Wood Chase (1817-1885), a renowned MD, publisher, & author from Ann Arbor, Michigan, this was one of the original "self-help" books when it first appeared in 1884, issued in accordance with the good doctor's belief, "Why conceal that which relieved distress?" In a hefty 865 pages, with Index in rear, it covers all manners of ailments affecting both humans & animals, along with suggestions for dealing with insects & vermin, & matters related to agriculture, cooking & food preparation, cleaning, & basic mechanics. With the copyright renewed (posthumously) in 1867 by F. B. Dickerson, this is a 1901 printing. 8vo, with brown cloth-covered boards elaborately decorated & lettered in black to front & spine. Condition is Fair: front board is nearly completely detached, both boards split at joints. Heavy rubbing with loss to extremities. Discoloration (like paint spatters) to entire exterior, with some paper residue affixed to rear board. Interior pages surprisingly show only modest tanning & are completely supple & unmarked save for an old name & address to ffep & the random spot or smudge; soiled spots to exterior sides of text block. Sewn binding is holding strong but a few pages in front & back matter are loosening or completely detached & ragged around the edges. Many odd pieces of ephemera glued or tucked in, including an 1896 receipt from an extermination of insects & hop louse on a farm in Napa, CA; a mimeographed recipe for Elderberry wine; a handwritten recipe from New Jersey for pickling 100 pounds of ham & beef & another for making beer from barley; & more!
