Richard Hynes has the knack of projecting himself and the reader back into the past. The first words in his book are "I'm going to school today..." and throughout the whole book he writes in the present tense. Richard was five when he started school in 1937 and his eye witness account continues throughout the war years and ends after VJ Day, when in his mid-teens, he is talking to the girls instead of tying them to lamppostsA"! Richard was no angel and his account of wartime life in Liverpool and, in particular, Norris Green, is full of incident. While vividly portraying the horrors of wartime bombing and the trials of rationing and restrictions, he and his mates had a great deal of freedom in which they used to get themselves into all sorts of escapades. Told with a great deal of humour (and sometimes tongue in cheek naivety from a man now older and wiser) there is never a dull moment in this very readable account.
