Riassunto:

It began with a simple question during a Bible study on the Gospel of John: "What happened to the Old Testament saints when they died?" The group fell silent. We knew the stories—Abraham in God's presence, Moses on the mountain, David as a man after God's own heart. But where did they go when their earthly lives ended? Did they immediately enter heaven? Did they wait somewhere? And if they waited, what changed when Jesus came?
That question, posed innocently enough, sent me on a multi-year journey through Scripture, theology, ancient Near Eastern literature, and the fascinating intersection of biblical eschatology and mythological frameworks. What I discovered was far more revolutionary than I had anticipated. The Gospel of John, particularly chapters 1 through 12, presents Jesus not merely as a teacher or miracle worker, but as the divine Revealer who fundamentally transformed the nature of death, the afterlife, and humanity's access to God.
The Structure of This Book
This book is structured to take you on the same journey I traveled, though hopefully in a more organized fashion than my own meandering path. It combines rigorous theological scholarship with imaginative narrative, academic framework with devotional reflection. Some chapters will feel like a seminary classroom; others will read like historical fiction. This is intentional.
The Gospel of John itself blends testimony and theology, sign and significance, narrative and discourse. To honor the text, I have chosen to mirror its approach. You will find:
Scholarly Analysis: Detailed examination of the seven signs, the "I Am" statements, and Jesus' references to Old Testament patriarchs (Abraham, Moses, Jacob, David). These sections engage with contemporary Johannine scholarship and build a careful exegetical foundation.
Mythological-Biblical Comparison: Exploration of how Jesus' role as the conquering Son of Man connects to ancient combat myths like the Enuma Elish, while remaining firmly rooted in biblical apocalyptic literature from Daniel and Ezekiel. This is not to suggest syncretism, but to demonstrate how the biblical narrative subverts and fulfills ancient human longings.
Fictional Narratives: Two extended imaginative accounts from the perspective of Lazarus in Sheol, encountering Abraham, Moses, King David, and Jacob. These are not meant to be dogmatic assertions about the afterlife but rather creative explorations that allow us to inhabit the theological truths emotionally and experientially. Additionally, you'll find a fictional narrative depicting the covenant transition and a framework chapter that systematically presents the theological argument.
Theological Framework: A rigorous presentation of the covenant transition from law to grace, from waiting to immediacy, from the "goad" of old covenant prodding to the "Gatling gun" of new covenant power. This section integrates Johannine, Pauline, and Petrine theology to demonstrate the coherence of the New Testament witness regarding Christ's descent, victory, and transformation of death.
