Francis Rabelais (c. 1483/1494?1553) was a French Renaissance writer, physician, humanist scholar, Greek expert, and Catholic priest (initially Franciscan, later Benedictine). He is best remembered today as the author of the comic masterpiece Gargantua and Pantagruel, a five-book series of satirical novels featuring the adventures of two giants.Rabelais remains a towering, if sometimes polarizing, figure in French literature?celebrated for his vitality, condemned for coarseness, and studied for his insight into the human condition during a time of religious and intellectual upheaval.ABOUT THIS SET: This "new edition with improvements" published in 1750 is beautifully bound in matching half light brown leather and marbled paper, covers are accented with gilt lining at the seams. Hubbed spines bear five raised bands and a burgundy and black leather title label stamped in gilt lettering and heavily ornamented with gilt design. All edges yellow stain. Marbled endpapers. Title pages are printed in red and black. Each volume contains handsome copperplate engravings for a total of 25 plates across all five volumes. This set should have a total of 27 plates -- 2 plates are missing and obviously cut out at the gutter within Volume III. On a shelf, this set spans 4.5 inches. OCLC #: 919298673; ESTC #: T52744.Volume I: Contains 9 leaves of plates, one frontispiece and 8 folding. (All plates present.) cxxi, 387 pp.Volume II: Contains 5 folding plates (all present). vi, 256 pp. Volume III: Contains 3 folding plates (missing 2 plates, one between pages 176/177 and pages 304/305). xvi, 349 pp.Volume IV: Contains 3 folding plates (all present). lxxiv, 360 pp. Volume V: Contains 5 plates, 4 of which are folding (all present). lviii, 304 pp. CONDITION: This set is beautiful with only light wear and several rub-through spots on the marbled paper binding and some minor wear along the extremities. Joints and hinges are quite strong, and each binding is sound. Leaves have lightly yet predominantly evenly toned with only occasional foxing or discoloration stain. Engravings are marvelous, yet two are missing as noted above. A delightful, lovely antiquarian complete set. PLEASE NOTE: This set will arrive with "signature required" upon delivery.
