Reprint in four volumes. viii, 348pp. and a frontispiece portrait; vi, 392pp.; vii, 295pp.; viii, 367pp. This edition of the works of Francois Rabelais (c.1483-1553) contains The five books of the Lives and Deeds of Gargantua and Pantagruel, the Pantagruelian prognostication, letters written by Rabelais during his stay in Italy In the Year 1536, and several other pieces by Rabelais. There is also an extract from Mr. Ozell's advertisement concerning his edition in 1737, a Life of Rabelais, and a substantial Preface. The four volumes are uniformly bound in contemporary full leather boards with gold titling on the spines. The cases of the books are in very good condition apart from scuffing and chipping to the leather on the boards that has taken parts of a thin top layer of leather from boards. This is particularly noticeable on volumes 1 an 2. The contents are tight and clean with a little scattered light foxing and heavier foxing to the frontispiece portrait and title-page of volume 1. Pages 26 and 27 of volume 2 are also a bit more heavily foxed and are soiled. There is a bookplate on the front fixed endpaper of volume 1 and a name has been written on the second and third front free endpapers of volume 1 and the second front free endpapers of volumes 2, 3 and 4.
