1653 CARTE DU ROYAUME DANNAM, COMPRENANT LES ROYAUMES DU TUMKIN ET DE LA COCINCHINE. An outstanding example of this rarity considered to be the first specification of the Kingdom of Annan, or Tonkin and what would later become North Vietnam. This ground breaking map in the mapping of Vietnam by Alexander de Rhodes and Pierre Mariette would underpin cartography in the region right through to the mid-19th century.This map is a combination of older cartogrfaphic data and the firsthand experiencce of Alexandre de Rhodes who was a Jesuit missionary and had been sent, along with Pero Marques Sr. to evangelise in this domain in North Vietnam. De Rhodes worked there until 1630 when he was forced to leave as the ruler, Trinh Trang became converned about him being a spy for the Nguyen and ran contrary to traditional Vietnamese values. Laid out extending from Quag Ngai, north to the Chinese border and west to Laos and Cambodia. Extends from the border with the Champa Kingdom (modern day Hoi An) north as far as Macao and what would become Hong Kong and Yunnan.Towards the top centre left, there is a great wall labelled Engree des Tunkinois dans la Chines and although it changed hands many times, was an active route of the various armies and was a primary gateway to China. The major north Vietnamese city, Tonkin (Hanoi) is noted as is the central highland range that divides the coastlands with the local tribal peoples noted here as the Kemoy.This map was engraved by Jean Pruthensus Somer and drawn by Pierre mariette in Paris for publication by Alexander de Rhodes Divers voyages et missions en la Chine et autre raouaymes de lOrient, aven son retour en Europe par la Perse et lArmenie, the most important Jesuit description of the Kingdom of Tonkin. It appears two examples of this map are cataloged at the Bibliotheqye Nationale de France and we located an example sold at auction in France for $13,000 (+ buyers premium).Overall size 37.5cm x 45cm including the margins. Condition is excellent.
