First Edition. Hardcover. Offered here is a first printing of the best-known and most significant contribution to the field of pyschology by animal behavior and motor theory pioneer Margaret Floy Washburn (1871 1939), the first woman awarded a PhD in psychology, the first woman elected to the Society of Experimental Psychologists, the second female Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, the second female president of the American Psychological Association, the 88th most cited psychologist of the 20th Century, and a major contributor to comparative psychology. The Animal Mind was the first published book based on experimental work in animal cognition. Washburn eschewed strict behaviorism's dismissal of consciousness and academic psychology's doctrine about the inobservability of mental phenomena in scientific investigation, and in these pages, she presents a compilation of experimental studies centering on "the animal mind as deduced from experimental evidence," studying mental phenomena such as learning and attention in animals and comparing the similarities between the mental structures of human and animal psyches as evidence of consciousness, with research including more than a hundred species of animal life. For several decades after its publication, The Animal Mind went through several editions and served as the standard textbook of comparative psychology. This first printing of Margaret Floy Washburn's The Animal Mind is from the collection of "The Expert on Experts," Florida State University cognitive psychologist Anders Ericsson (1947-2020), the globally recognized researcher in the field of performance studies and the psychological nature of expertise whose work Malcolm Gladwell popularized in his bestselling book Outliers. 8" X 5 1/2". x, [ii], 333pp, plus ads. Presents nicely in protective archival sleeve. Bound in russet brown cloth over boards, with upper board lettered in black and spine lettered in gilt.
