Ribera/ Sinopsis: En la primera mitad del siglo xix, Eugène Sue inmortaliza la leyenda del judío errante con la creación de esta larga novela escrita entre 1844 y 1845, convirtiéndola en un relato folletinesco, que supuso un gran éxito para Le Constitutionel, el periódico que la publicó por entregas. El judío errante narra los episodios de una familia francesa de rancio abolengo y religión protestante descendientes de aquel judío errante, condenado por Cristo a vagar indefinidamente transmitiendo a la vez la enfermedad del cólera que se exilia por diversos lugares del mundo. Ciento cincuenta años después solo quedan siete descendientes, únicos herederos de un cuantioso legado: para poder recibirlo, cada uno de ellos debe poseer una medalla de bronce con un par de inscripciones que indican la fecha y el lugar en el que estas siete personas deben reunirse. La Compañía de Jesús, que desea apoderarse de esta herencia, utilizará distintos medios, sutiles y violentos, para intentar eliminar a todos los herederos legítimos (excepto al misionero) e impedir que estén en París en la fecha indicada./ R30-6 Size: 14.5x20.5. Rikt illlustrerad, delvis i färg. Billmark var litograf och tecknare, elev till kopparstickaren Christian Didrik Forssell. Men 1827 lämnade han Forssells ateljé, övergav gravyren för litografin som han prövat i bl. a. Etyder för landskapstecknare (1828-30) och Skotska vyer, lämnade Sverige 1833 och var därefter bosatt i Paris till sin död. Därifrån företog han flera resor till Tyskland, Schweiz, Italien och hemlandet. 1853-1855 utgav han "Gripsholm" som blev hans genombrott i Sverige. Till hans mest kända - och sällsynta - verk hör ett Stockholmspanorama som trycktes 1868 i Paris, men tecknades 1864 från en fast förankrad ballong över Bredablick på Skansen. Billmark avled under oklara omständigheter under kommunardupproret 1870 under Paris belägring, varför hans dödsdag inte är känd.

Includes the half title and large fold-out map. Map is in near fine condition, small dampstain along right hinge, light wear along margins. (Sabin 48703) (Howes M579) (Graff 2781). The first edition of this work was published in Paris in 1804, titled Voyage à l'ouest des monts Alléghanys, dans les états de l'Ohio, du Kentucky, et du Tennessée, et retour à Charleston par les Hautes-Carolines. The first English edition was published in London in 1805, with a second edition and the abridged edition following the same year. An excellent account of Francois A. Michaux's voyage down the Ohio River, through the Kentucky territory and his return to Charleston.
