He asks for the hamper to be sent, 'so packed & sealed, together with 3 dozen hamper of His, (Mr. Knobel's) best Port ready for immediate drinking by the Hoy to Woodbridge in Suffolk, as last winter'. Aggiungi al carrello4to: 3 pp. A bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged and creased paper. Thin strip of brown paper mount still adhering in inner margin of reverse of second leaf. Forty-six lines of text, clear and complete. A small square of paper, bearing Von Bulow's red wax seal (with clear impression) has been cut away from the second leaf and neatly placed beneath the signature. Address, with circular Hull postmark in black ink, on reverse of second leaf. According to the 1911 edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica, von Bulow was 'distinguished for his admiration of England and English institutions', and this letter addressed to the Yarmouth shipping agent John Shelly, bears witness to that fact. He thanks Shelly for his 'kind & friendly acception [sic] of me and my errand. - You will have heard of my prosperity in Norwich, in having and find a friend I knew not, Mr. Youngman who with his family shewed me all possible attention and also was the Engine that did put all thing in motion'. He feels sure Shelly will 'rejoice in the good tidings I have to tell you with respect to Hull', where 'Mr Saunders' has collected more than £40 in St John's Church. 'I myself above £13. and we have received about £10 donation to the vessel - But after I preached here, a Gentleman came in to the vestry and put them all who were present in fire - an auxiliare Society was formed last night for the genl: Obj: of the Society'. Gives details of a resolution passed concerning '18 Collectors' and of another that 'the Vessel to meet the purpose should be between 50-55 tons or so about'. He asks Shelly to 'find out a Vessel in your nighbourhood [sic] - if you could put fire in Mr. Palmer he may take a good example and offer us such a Vessel for a moderate price'. Describes the required specifications, including that it 'is able to clear a lee shore'. Asks for the answer to be sent to him care of 'Mr. Greenwood in Hull'.…

He is sorry to have missed Childers: 'I came back early on Sat: morning fairly driven home by the weather.' Reports that 'Better reviews of the book are now appearing Athenaeum - evidently by Dilke: Tablet: Pall Mall &c.' Thinks 'Clarke will use his influence with the Times', the idea that 'King' has done so being 'entirely out of the question'. He does not 'suppose there is a word of truth in that paragraph in Modern Society', a paper about which he knows nothing: 'from its print & style it seems pretty low'. 'If such a statement had appeared in any reputable quarter, it might have been worth while writing to say that the Queen had given full permission - but I wd not condescend to correct "Modern Society".' The rest of the letter refers to a visit by 'Jack' (his son John Murray V) to 'Hugh' and 'Dorothy'.…

Aggiungi al carrello3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Neatly written out, with Sowerby's expansive signature. He begins by explaining that the Society has not 'printed a list of Fellows [] since the one I gave you some short time back, the present edition is rather imperfect but a new one will be published at no very distant date, a Copy shall then be sent to you'. Walford now turns to the main subject of the letter: 'The Council have been making enquiries respecting the Title of the Duke of Rousillon and were advised by the French Embassy to write to the French Minister at Paris, which has been done, and the Council now wait an answer'. Sowerby has been 'Officially informed', that very day, 'that the French Government are, and have been since the receipt of our letter, making all enquiries which are not yet completed.' Note: Walter Scott's Antiquary says: "In the first place, I will say that although a "Duke" of Roussillon figures in Boccaccio, and also in Shakespeare, it is only as an imaginary character; for although there were Counts," there never were Dukes, of Roussillon, so far as I can discover".…

Brown begins: 'I have sent you enclos'd a receipt in full for what you was Indebted to me'. He would have answered Brown's letter before, but has been 'very Ill for these six weeks past & oblig'd to be by the Sea side'. He returns his 'most sincere thanks' for Brown's 'kind Favor's [sic]', and hopes to have 'any future Commissions which you wish to have executed'. Randall was one of the foremost London coachmakers of the period, serving in 1806 as Master of the Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers of London. He was also a member of Dunckerley's Lodge of Harmony No. 255. There are several references to Brown and his family in 'Berlin and the Prussian Court in 1798: Journal of Thomas Boylston Adams, Secretary to the United States Legation at Berlin' (1916), and there is a disparaging comment on him in 'The Diaries and Letters of Sir George Jackson' (London: Bentley, 1872), vol.1, p.113. …

Aggiungi al carrello2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, aged and spotted, with loss at foot of reverse of last leaf, the verso of which is addressed to 'Mr Palmer | Bookseller | 18 Paternoster Row'. The recipient is the theological bookseller Ebenezer Palmer the elder (c.1782-1866). Twenty-two lines of text in a difficult hand. The stridently pious tone perhaps hints at some degree of mental instability. The letter opens: 'My dear Sir & friend in the LORD | I greet you in Him'. He avails himself of the opportunity 'of writing by Mr paris', and calls for blessings on Palmer's house for his work with the Gospel Tract Society and Village Sermon Society. He feels sure that the 'friends' in the former with 'concur in the promotion' of the latter, 'the object of both being one & the same'. He ends with the suggestion that Palmer, 'through some subordinate Person', should 'arrange so as to get many of he little bookselling Pamphlets [?] to purchase for [?] & for ready money a quarter of an hundred at a time the Knowledge of the V S Society would soon be diffused thro the Cities & Borough of Southwark.' Hawker was the grandfather of the eccentric Cornish clergyman and antiquary Robert Stephen Hawker, author of 'The Song of the Western Man' ('And shall Trelawny die?').…
