Just a delightful book of rhymes stunningly illustrated by Wright and Winter. Professor Leroy Freeman Jackson (1881-1958), was born in London, Ontario, Canada, and moved with his family to North Dakota in the early 1890s. Jackson received his bachelors degree in 1902 and his masters degree from the University of Chicago in 1909. Iin 1912 he went to Harvard for a year to conduct research under Frederick Jackson Turner. After several years of holding teaching positions throughout North Dakota and Minnesota, Jackson began teaching at the State College of Washington in Pullman, where he ultimately became acting Head of the Social Science Division. His teaching career was put on hold during World War I, when in 1917, Jackson went overseas to serve as first lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps. He later served with the Army Educational Corps as the conductor of the Citizenship Institutes. In 1921 he moved to Burnsville, North Carolina, to become director of the Stanley McCormick School (which later became the Carolina New College), an experimental progressive education school funded by Nettie Fowler McCormick. When the school closed down in 1928, Jackson became Dean of the College of the City of Asheville in North Carolina. Jackson went to work for the United States Indian Service in 1932 and would spend the next four years working with Native American students. The Indian Service first sent him to Alaska to be the director of the newly established Wrangell Institute, which included students from the Tlingit and Yakama tribes. In 1934, Jackson was sent to Fort Wingate, New Mexico to work with the Navajo as director of the Charles H. Burke School. In 1935 he was transferred to the Taos Day School. In 1936 Jackson retired from teaching and moved to Olympia, Washington where he worked for the State Department of Social Security. Jackson was the author of several published articles, monographs, and children's books of nursery rhymes, including The Peter Patter Book (1918) and Jolly Jinks Song Book (1922). He died in Pomona, California, in 1958. [from the finding aid to Jackson's papers in the Online Archive of California] Blanche Fisher Wright Laite (1887 - 1971) was an American children's book illustrator, best known for illustrating The Real Mother Goose (1916, Rand McNally). Milo Winter (1888 - 1956) was an American book illustrator, who created editions of Aesop's Fables, Arabian Nights, Alice in Wonderland, A Christmas Carol, Gulliver's Travels, Tanglewood Tales (1913), and others.

Aggiungi al carrelloCirca 1870. Albumen print photograph (220 x 280 mm) of an oil painting, laid down on original album page (ink stains within the negative, edges of the page stained), signature appears on painting at lower left:T. Wright. Photographer unknown. The painting has been identified as Scene on theWaipunga River, New Zealand, by Thomas Wright, which is held in the collection of the Bendigo Art Gallery. (Identification courtesy of Tansy Curtin, Senior Curator, Bendigo Art Gallery). The English-born painter and photographer Thomas Wright (1830-1881) arrived in Melbourne in 1852 and worked professionally as a landscape and portrait painter. As early as 1852 he had won a gold medal at the Victorian Industrial Exhibition for his work View on the River Plenty. He later spent some time prospecting for gold at Bendigo, and by the early 1860s he was painting local scenes in that region, some of which became published as lithographs. In the mid 1860s he was based in Melbourne once again, employed as drawing master at Wesley College. In 1865 he visited New Zealand, and exhibited a number of oil paintings of New Zealand subjects at the 1866 Intercolonial Exhibition. Wright completed a series of large scale allegorical paintings in honour of the visit of Prince Alfred in 1867. From 1867-72 he is also listed as a professional photographer with a studio in Bourke Street. It seems reasonable to suggest that Wright himself may have produced this carte de visite of his own oil painting.

Aggiungi al carrelloSee Procter's entry in the Oxford DNB. 4pp, 12mo. Bifolium with mourning border. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. 85 lines of closely- and neatly-written text. He begins by thanking Sutton for 'the welcome portrait of Sir Edward Lugden'. He gives an example of Lugden's 'happy election repartee'(a joke about 'Lather' and 'the present price of "Soap"'), for which, if no other reason, he 'deserves a niche in my tonsorial gallery'. (Lugden (1781-1875), a noted Conservative politician, was reputed to be the son of a barber.) Stating that he will be happy to tell Sutton 'all I know touching Tom Moody', he gives an account, amounting to a quarter of the letter, of the only occasion on which he 'watched hounds' and 'quaffed brown beer with huntsmen', while going 'with a friend to explore the wild beauties of The Brushes (an enlarged edition of Boggart Ho' Clough,) approaching Saddleworth'. He stating that he 'had several times the pleasure of seeing an oil painting of the famous whipper-in, at a shop in Long Millgate', wondering how it could have travelled 'so far out of its course'. The picture dealer had no doubt ('have picture dealers ever any doubts?') that it was genuine. 'The price was thirty shillings, which Sum I was very nearly expending. The shop is now closed, but the picture might possibly be found in the possession of Kirby Ogden, Undertaker, and dealer in old curiosities.' After a paragraph noting 'the neglected condition of honest Tom's grave in Barrow churchyard' he concludes with reference to 'a sketch of Moody's grave', which an individual 'has promised to unveil - or unearth - some early day.' See Image.
