A wise chief named Moshweshwe built a new Basotho nation with diplomacy and courage, while in the south the Xhosa-speaking tribes - who had been the first to come face to face with the Dutch and the British - struggled to keep their independence. A complex century of colonisation has been admirably analysed and condensed to provide a highly readable and informative overview of a crucial area in South African history. A series of freshly drawn maps further clarifies a history concerned with the shaping and breaking of many different nations and empires.
