During the Difaqane, marauding tribes like the 'Mantatees' led by the Tlokwa warrior queen Mmanthatisi scattered more peaceful peoples and cut a swathe of destruction and suffering across the sub-continent. A wise chief named Moshweshwe built a new Basotho nation with diplomacy and courage, while in the south the Xhosa-speaking tribes - who had been the first to come face to face with the Dutch and the British - struggled to keep their independence.
