For many years past there has been an obvious im…balance in the teaching of Religious Knowledge to Christians and Muslims in Nigerian schools The Nigerian Muslims have been greatly handicapped in the teaching or learning of their religion merely because of the utter lack of suitable school books that will teach Islamic scriptures, Islamic laws and ideas in any language other than Arabic. The utter dependence on Arabic of works on the religion of Islam has greatly monopolized Islamic education and contained it within a very small circle of those mallams who happen to have learned Arabic well enough to read about Islam in its basic Arabic sources. But one cannot expect every Muslim desiring to learn about his religion to take the trouble to learn Arabic first before he can know about Islam. We are always claiming that Islam is a universal religion and we will be doing a great disservice to the cause of Islam if we confine the learning of its morals and ideals to those few who know Arabic. It is indeed high time that the teaching of Islam is freed completely from the yoke of Arabic language and is done in any linguistic media and that is indeed why the present work by Dr Doi is a most welcome one It meets a dire need and fills a clear gap in the educational set-up in this great country Dr Doi is a recognized authority on Islam with the highest academic degrees from the highest institutions of the world I am quite confident that Dr Doi's labour and scholarly resourcefulness will not go unrewarded.
