This book delves into the complex world of the Mississippi River, exploring its vast basin and the challenges posed by its powerful floods. The author, a renowned engineer of his time, meticulously details the river's topography, hydrography, and hydrometry, offering a scientific framework for understanding its unique characteristics. Through detailed observations and measurements, he examines the river's slope, cross-section, and the immense volume of water and sediment it carries. The book also delves into the history of levee construction and explores various methods of flood control, including cut-offs, outlets, and reservoir systems. The book positions itself within the broader historical context of river engineering and hydraulics, offering a comprehensive study of the Mississippi River that draws upon centuries of European experience while presenting new insights based on the author's own extensive research and observations. The book's thematic depth extends beyond scientific analysis to encompass the vital role of the Mississippi in American history and the pressing need for effective flood control measures to protect the livelihoods of those living within its basin. The author's meticulous research and innovative approach offer invaluable insights into the Mississippi River, a critical waterway shaping the very landscape of the American nation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
