Célébré dans le monde juif pour ses peintures sur les thèmes bibliques, Abel Pann (Kreslawka, 1883 Jérusalem, 1963) est l'auteur d'une uvre peu connue, aussi multiple par ses supports (peintures, dessins, estampes) que par ses sujets (héros et scènes bibliques, judaïsme d'Europe orientale, scènes de Palestine, société française) ou que par ses tonalités (romantique, lyrique, caricaturale). Né Abba Pfeffermann en Lettonie, Abel Pann est issu d'un milieu juif orthodoxe. Après avoir quitté sa famille, il travaille dans une imprimerie et apprend le métier de graveur. Puis il étudie à l'Académie des beaux-arts d'Odessa et se spécialise dans la peinture, le dessin d'humour et la caricature, dont le portrait-charge. Il arrive à Paris en 1905 et fréquente les artistes de la Ruche. Ses dessins sont publiés dans diverses revues. De 1912 à 1913, il séjourne à Jérusalem et enseigne à l'École des beaux-arts de Bezalel. Sioniste convaincu, il rentre à Paris pour organiser son départ définitif ; mais ses projets sont empêchés par la déclaration de guerre. De 1914 à 1917, Abel Pann réalise des affiches populaires, destinées à éveiller le sentiment patriotique et à renforcer le moral des Français. Il s'inquiète aussi de la situation de ses coreligionnaires sur le front oriental. Dès juillet 1914, les juifs subissent des exactions de la part de l'armée tsariste et de la population polonaise. Abel Pann dénonce ces persécutions par une impressionnante suite de dessins exécutés entre décembre 1915 et la fin de 1916. Mais l'ambassadeur russe à Paris intervient pour en empêcher la publication. En 1917, certain que les juifs de la diaspora seront toujours perdants, Abel Pann part pour les États-Unis. Il s'établit en Palestine à partir de 1920, enseigne à l'école de Bezalel et entame la création d'une uvre sur la Bible. Célébré dans le monde juif pour ses peintures sur les thèmes bibliques, Abel Pann (Kreslawka, 1883 Jérusalem, 1963) est l'auteur d'une uvre peu connue, aussi multiple par ses supports (peintures, dessins, estampes) que par ses sujets (héros et scènes bibliques, judaïsme d'Europe orientale, scènes de Palestine, société française) ou que par ses tonalités (romantique, lyrique, caricaturale). Né Abba Pfeffermann en Lettonie, Abel Pann est issu d'un milieu juif orthodoxe. Après avoir quitté sa famille, il travaille dans une imprimerie et apprend le métier de graveur. Puis il étudie à l'Académie des beaux-arts d'Odessa et se spécialise dans la peinture, le dessin d'humour et la caricature, dont le portrait-charge. Il arrive à Paris en 1905 et fréquente les artistes de la Ruche. Ses dessins sont publiés dans diverses revues. De 1912 à 1913, il séjourne à Jérusalem et enseigne à l'École des beaux-arts de Bezalel. Sioniste convaincu, il rentre à Paris pour organiser son départ définitif ; mais ses projets sont empêchés par la déclaration de guerre. De 1914 à 1917, Abel Pann réalise des affiches populaires, destinées à éveiller le sentiment patriotique et à renforcer le moral des Français. Il s'inquiète aussi de la situation de ses coreligionnaires sur le front oriental. Dès juillet 1914, les juifs subissent des exactions de la part de l'armée tsariste et de la population polonaise. Abel Pann dénonce ces persécutions par une impressionnante suite de dessins exécutés entre décembre 1915 et la fin de 1916. Mais l'ambassadeur russe à Paris intervient pour en empêcher la publication. En 1917, certain que les juifs de la diaspora seront toujours perdants, Abel Pann part pour les États-Unis. Il s'établit en Palestine à partir de 1920, enseigne à l'école de Bezalel et entame la création d'une uvre sur la Bible.
