The Ball culminates in the crowning of "Miss Fashionetta." Also included are some invitations, programs and tickets. The 1986 and 1988 programs are in VERY GOOD CONDITION: just some light wear from age and use, overall tight, bright, clean and unmarked, as are the invitations, program and ticket. The 1990 Program is in GOOD CONDITION: with nail polish stains, corner creases and chips on the covers, internally some light wear from handling and some corner-tip creases, otherwise tight, bright, clean and unmarked. An uncommon group of vintage programs documenting the young Black Sorority Women of the San Francisco Bay Area's East Bay region. Alpha Kappa Alpha was the first Greek sorority founded by African American women. Established on January 15, 1908 at Howard University by nine Black students wishing to create an organization for college educated women that would support their academic and personal goals. The Vallejo California's Kappa Beta Omega Chapter in the Bay Area's Solano County is known for their community service and sponsorship of Fashionetta, an annual event during which African American high school girls in their senior year compete for college scholarships by engaging in various academic and civic activities. The Ball is a fundraiser for the Kappa Beta Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Debutante program is open to a select group of young Black ladies who are high school seniors or local college freshmen.

Oatis, Jr. Softcover, illustrated paper wrappers, side staple bound, 11" x 8.5", 110 pages, illustrated throughout with historic b&w photographs, p…ortraits and advertisements of members of Meridians Black Social and Fraternal Clubs and many Black community business advertisers. GOOD CONDITION: covers pulling/tearing from the staples but still attached, covers have wear, light creasing, small spotting and penned contact info, internally, some penned name and addresses, and light signs of wear from age and use, overall a respectable copy of this historic documentation of the Black urban and cultural landscape in 1974 Mississippi. Scarce, none in OCLC collections worldwide. The African American Business District provided services that Meridian's Black community could not otherwise receive. Jim Crow laws that were passed across the country from 1876 to 1965 kept most of Meridian's businesses segregated. Many white owned businesses either refused to serve Black customers or served them on a limited basis. Beginning around the turn of the 20th century, pioneering African American businesspeople stepped forward to fill the needs of their community. The Council of Organizations formed in 1972 to promote the social, cultural, and educational interests of the African American community in Meridian. With representation from Black civic, social, business, professional, fraternal, and educational clubs, the Council provides scholarships and hosts the celebrated Meridian Picnic each year in Meridian or host regions. Long time Black Community leader and educator C. E. Oatis, Jr. (1925-2011) served as President of the National Council of Meridianiates for 30 years.

GOOD CONDITION: covers have edge and corner creasing and some closed tears to the top edge, internally light creasing to the corner-tips, and light wear from age and use, overall tight, bright, clean and unmarked. A remarkable historic documentation of the Black Women in the leadership roles of a pivotal African American religious and activist organization at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. Scarce, none in OCLC collections worldwide. The National Baptist Convention (NBC) was founded in 1895, A major organization of African American Baptists and the nation's largest Black religious organization. Unfortunately, the NCB was not supportive of women's leadership so in 1900 two Black Women Suffragists and Civil Rights Activists, Sarah Willie Layten (1864-1950) and Nannie Helen Burroughs (1879-1961) played pivotal leadership roles in founding the Woman's Convention Auxiliary to the NBC. Representing over one million Black Baptist women, the Auxiliary provided means through which women organized on state and local levels around religious, political, and social issues, making their place of worship an epicenter for Black liberation and social change.

A carte de visite portrait of activist and theosophist Annie Besant (1847-1933), taken by the German portrait photographer Hayman Seleg Mendelssohn (1847-1908). Besant was a campaigner for a number of activist causes in Britain, first as a speaker and writer for the National Secular Society, where she met…atheist activist Charles Bradlaugh; the two were prosecuted for breaching the Obscene Publications Act when they published Charles Knowlton's The Fruits of Philosophy, a pamphlet about birth control methods. Besant was active in socialist and union organizing with the Fabian Society and Social Democratic Federation. Around 1890 Besant met Helena Blavatsky and became interested in theosophy; this led her to India, where she established both schools and Masonic lodges and joined the Indian National Congress. Her campaigning for Indian independence led first to her arrest and then to election as president of the INC in 1917. She continued to publish on Indian politics and theosophical topics until her death in India in 1933. Carte de visite measuring 2 ? x 4 inches. With later manuscript pencil markings on the verso. A few spots on the photograph, with some wear to mount.

His progressive activism led to a deportation order as a subversive during the Red Scare, though he was defended by the Los Angeles chapter of the Committee for the Protection of the Foreign-born, and the charges were later dropped. This book, while fairly widely held institutionally, is scarce in the trade. This, a lovely signed copy fromK?chi, a key figure in the post-war Japanese community in Los Angeles. 23x15cm, 53, [1]pp. English translation by Ben Kobashigawa. Essentially all of the relevant literature for a two day course on student protests on US campuses, divided into three sections detailed in the text: "The Campus Dur…ing Crisis" discussing the roles of the faculty, the legality of police involvement in campus protests, the role of student leaders etc.; "The Campus After Crisis" with particular focus on the Kent State atrocity, the makeup of post demonstration tribunals and hearing committees, and a comparison of student rules regarding protest from the perspective of the campus, and when the "rules" are organized from the perspective of the students (the test case here is contributed by the students of UC Berkeley); and the final part, "The Aftermath of Crisis" which contains an article entitled "Universities and Political Involvement: A Tentative Agenda" alongside sections detailing the Free Speech policies of a number of prominent US universities and colleges, the legality of demonstration at various institutions, and a clear inference that campus authorities regularly break the law and behave unconstitutionally when suppressing students exercising their rights to free speech and assembly on the sites set aside for this purpose. 54 years old at the date of cataloging, this academic and extremely considered and detailed text suggests that nothing changes but it stays the same, and that few democratic rights survive their first encounter with aggressive institutional self interest.

One quote states ".1947 recommendation to create a "Jewish State" in Palestine was approved, at the very first vote, only by European, American, and Australasian States.for every Asian State, and every African State (with the exception of the Union of South Africa) voted against it?" Minor fading, and a small .5" tear to the left side of the handbill. Overall very good condition. An early set of pro-Palestinian documents.

This manual is printed for its educational value and as a humble addition to the total of mankind's knowledge." The pamphlet is facetiously dedicated to "our beloved leader Mr. R. M. Nixon without whose Mexican-American policy this book might not have been necessary." Printed on the inner front and back wrapper is Stone Kingdom's "Statement to the People" and printed on back cover is a list of pamphlets available for mail order from the publisher, including titles such as "D.M.T. Sections include "Pharmacology and Classification," "The Issue of Marijuana Abuse," "Marijuana as a Social Issue", "The Issue of Marijuana Regulation", and "Marijuana as a Political Issue." The portrait was likely taken around the early 1900s, based on Barton's apparent age and the lace fichu she wears, which resembles the one worn in her 1904 portrait by James E. Purdy. Barton wears several Red Cross brooches-one at the neck and one on a ribbo…n at the chest-and sits beside another Red Cross piece, likely a nurse's cap. These accoutrements may date the photograph to somewhat before 1904; that year, she was pressured to resign as president of the Red Cross, and in her Purdy portrait does not wear any of its insignia. Very good contrast. Some marks on the recto with one small chip to lower right margin; excellent. Silver gelatin print measuring 3 ¾ x 5 ¾ inches. Manuscript verso including ?Brown Bros.?, ?Clara Barton?, ?BARTON, CLARA / portraits.
