The volume traces Malpighi's groundbreaking observations on chick development and organ structure, placing his work within the broader rise of microscopy and early modern experimental science. Drawing on historical analysis and primary sources, it explores how his research challenged prevailing theories of generation and helped lay foundations for modern embryology and histology. --- Howard B. Adelmann's five-volume study of the seventeenth-century Italian anatomist Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) and the history of embryology. The first volume is a long biography of Malpighi. At the center of the work are Malpighi's two Latin treatises on how the chick develops inside the egg: De formatione pulli in ovo, together with its appendix, in which he returned to the incubated egg to confirm earlier findings and record new ones. Both are given in Latin and English, and Malpighi's eleven engraved plates are reproduced. A large commentary then follows the embryology of particular organs, among them the heart, kidneys and digestive tract. It also traces earlier writers on generation from Aristotle to William Harvey and later figures such as Haller. The set is illustrated with color plates and a map, and it closes with a bibliography in the fifth volume. …
