Adelmann's five-volume study of the seventeenth-century Italian anatomist Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) and the history of embryology. The first volume is a long biography of Malpighi. At the center of the work are Malpighi's two Latin treatises on how the chick develops inside the egg: De formatione pulli in ovo, together with its appendix, in which he returned to the incubated egg to confirm earlier findings and record new ones. Both are given in Latin and English, and Malpighi's eleven engraved plates are reproduced. A large commentary then follows the embryology of particular organs, among them the heart, kidneys and digestive tract. It also traces earlier writers on generation from Aristotle to William Harvey and later figures such as Haller.
