All volumes remain tightly-bound, with minor evidence of rubbing to the extremities. Each volume carries a rather nice bookplate of J. H. Burton, depicti…ng a schooner in full sail bordered by mermaids. The bookplate is initialled "HN" (Harold Nelson, famed British bookplate designer, artist, and engraver). Internally, all volumes are in excellent condition and appear to have been seldom read or even opened. The words "Kamashastra Edition" appear at the bottom of the spine of each volume. The magnificent "Library Edition" of The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night translated from the Arabic by Captain Sir R. F. Burton and reprinted from the original 1885 privately-circulated Kamashastra Society edition. It is edited by Leonard C. Smithers and illustrated by a series of seventy-one inserted original illustrations reproduced from the original pictures in oils specially painted by Albert Letchford.

Several years later, H.S. Nichols published a twelve-volume illustrated edition (1897) featuring illustrations by the Burton's family painter, Albert Letchford, who was employed to paint portraits of the family and eventually entrusted to make a cast of Burton's head after his death. Published the same year as the illustrated edition, this American collection of Letchford's seventy Arabian Nights illustrations lushly captures the sensuality of Burton's translation in black and white photogravures. This scarce deluxe edition is limited to 500 numbered copies, of which this is 376. Moderate wear to extremities, concentrated to corners and tips, rubbing to spine label, tiny tide mark to bottom of front and rear hinges, contemporary owner inscription to ffep, several faintly foxed tissue guards, still near fine. Bound by Leighton, Son & Hodge in full blue cloth, ornately stamped in gilt, black calf spine label, teg, yellow endpapers. The Kamashastra Society was a fictional organisation founded by Richard Burt…on and Forster Fitzgerald to act as a legal device to avoid prosecution under obscenity laws, as they published risque works.'Arabian Nights', or 'One Thousand and One Nights', is a collection of folk tales from the Middle East. It was collected over centuries, with the roots of the tales being traced from Greek, Indian, Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Jewish folklore. The tales are being told by Scheherazade to the King Shahryar, in a bid to save her life. After discovering his wife was cheating on him, he killed her, and vowed to marry a new virgin every day, and then behead them the next. In this vein, he had killed one-thousand and one women before marrying Scheherazade. Scheherazade entices the King by telling him a story on their first night together, pausing halfway through as the sun came up. The King, being absorbed by the story, keeps Scheherazade alive, eager to hear more from her.This translation is by Richard Burton. Burton's translation is celebrated, but was only able to be printed in subscribers-only editions upon the publication, due to the sexual content in the tales, which were frowned upon at the time. With a tissue guard to each plate, identifying the scene of which the painting represents. Albert Letchford was a English artist who spent most of his time living and painting in Italy. He is best known for this wonderful series of oil paintings accompanying Burton's important and celebrated work, 'Arabian Nights'. Disbound as issued, housed in the publisher's original cloth portfolio. Plates are bright, with light scattered spotting, predominantly to the margins and generally not affecting the illustration. Externally the portfolio is worn, with damp staining and discolouration to boards. Splitting to the cloth at the joints, with the rear joint completely detached, causing the backstrip to lift and the rear board to partially detach. Lacking a portion of the front label, with an additional label adhered to the spine, which is discoloured and chipped. Marking to paste downs, with fraying to the cloth. Good.
