Aldis's major contribution to Scottish bibliography, A List of Books printed In Scotland before 1700, published in 1904, consists of four sections: (i) introductory and explanatory material, (ii) the main list of books arranged by year and alphabetically by author or title within the year, (iii) a list of printers, booksellers and stationers, (iv) an index to the list of books. This National Library of Scotland revised edition amends Aldis' main list (ii) to incorporate, in addition to his original 3919 entries, some 1628 further entries. The reprint also includes a supplementary list of some 189 printers, booksellers and stationers, "but very few relate to proprietors of printing businesses whose names would appear in the imprints of books: Most of the names are those of booksellers stationers, bookbinders, paper- and parchment-makers and Journeymen printers."
