Questo rifacimento in volgare dell'Historia de duobus amantibus, composta nel 1444 da Enea Silvio Piccolomini, che quattordici anni dopo salì al soglio pontificio con il nome di Pio II, conobbe un immediato successo fin dalla princeps apparsa a Firenze agli inizi dell'ultimo ventennio del Quattrocento. Non si tratta però di un semplice volgarizzamento: Braccesi interviene infatti sul testo originario non solo a livello contenutistico, eliminando episodi secondari e soprattutto mutando in lieto fine il tragico epilogo della vicenda amorosa dei due giovani protagonisti, ma anche a livello formale, aggiungendo alla narrazione in prosa alcuni componimenti poetici in linea con la moda letteraria del tempo.
