No other copy recorded: a rare and valuable source on the history of Sabbatai Zevi, entitled "Sabathai, that is, the fake Messiah of the Jews, who in 1666 declared himself Muslim in Constantinople". This is an important and detailed biography, written in his lifetime, of the self-proclaimed Messiah, Sabbatai Zevi (1626-76), from his birth through his conversion to Islam. The anonymous author, possibly an Italian diplomat, completed his report in Constantinople and sent it to his Italian correspondent on 16 December 1666. - Some scholars have attributed the work to Carlo Alfano, while others attribute it to Friedrich Ragstat von Weile (1648-1729), a Jewish convert to Christianity. Throughout, the author refers to events he witnessed himself; his words suggest he was a Jesuit. - All 17th and 18th century Sabbatai Zevi material is extremely rare: reflecting an acutely embarrassing event in Jewish history, it was actively suppressed by subsequent generations of Jewish rabbis, scholars and collectors, and only from the mid-20th century onwards did a new appreciation for these books begin, which by then had almost all been destroyed. This edition is exceptionally rare, possibly unique: only two copies of the first edition (ca. 1669) are recorded. In his book "Sabbatai Sevi: The Mystical Messiah", Gershom Scholem mentions that he had not laid eyes on the work by Carlo Alfano, printed in Viterbo (cf. p. 763). - Some brownstaining throughout. The upper third of leaf B7 is torn and missing. A number of near-contemporary markings and inscriptions in ink on the last page. - From the Toaff family collection: lower pastedown bears the bookplate of the Italian historian Ariel Toaff (b. 1942), son of Elio Toaff (1915-2015), long Chief Rabbi of Rome. - Cf.
