The poetry of The Faerie Queene is moral and allegorical not because Spenser attempts to impose dogmas on human experience, but because of the variety and interest he finds in what he conceived to be the permanent realities of human nature. The greatness of his poetry lies in its power to bring to life psychological, moral, and spiritual realities and to present them in continually chang- ing perspectives, line after line, stanza after stanza. The life of the poem is in the details of its verse, and it is attention to its language that puts the reader in possession of its poised and generous moral intelligence. The Poetry of The Faerie Queene is divided into three parts. Part I concerns both the practical problem of the right relation between the reader and the poem and more theo- retical problems about the nature of the reality constituted by Spenser's verse.
