A new collection of ancient and modern views of the alma city of Rome, drawn from life and engraved by Domenico Amici presents prints of Roman monuments and historical buildings, such as the Colosseum, Vatican, Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. They are dated between 1832 and 1841. Domenico Amici (1808-1871) was an Italian draughtsman and etcher. He studied the work of Italian artist Luigi Rossini, active in early 1820, who was known for his masterful etching and architectural draughtsmanship of Roman ruins.

Bound with: In addition to the two volumes, there is an engraving by Parboni and Acquaroni after Cockerell of the reconstructed forum entitled 'Antico Foro Romano'. Ref.: Rossetti, ii: 363, 365 Condition: The binding with minor abrasions and marks of usage. Contents with occasional minor blemish but generally clean. Notes: Although both works are dated 1839, the 'Obelischi' contains 5 plates dated 1840. Rossetti mentions an edition entitled 'Raccolta di trenta vedute degli obelischi, scelte fontane e chiostri di Roma' (Rossetti 365). Presumably, our copy of 'Obelischi' is an earlier version with only 20 plates, which does not correspond to the later edition with 30 plates. The different title, 'Obelischi, pubbliche fontane e chiostri della Città di Roma', on our copy could explain this discrepancy.

Copertina originale stampata con titolo entro cornice di fregi ornamentali. Fioriture sparse, ma buon es., a pieni marg…ini. (9733) Nota raccolta di vedute eseguite dal calcografo Domenico Amici, le cui tavole (con la dicitura "Domenico Amici disegnò dal vero e incise") recano date variabili, tra il 1837 ed il 1841; quest'ultima corrisponde quindi alla vera data di pubblicazione. Le vedute del nostro album (oltre al frontespizio) raffigurano 11 Fontane, 11 Obelischi e 5 Chiostri); esse sono per lo più assai animate, con cittadini a passeggio e piccole scene popolari, a fianco di ragguardevoli monumenti. Domenico Amici (1808-dopo 1871) fu prolifico incisore romano, e pubblicò sia raccolte come la presente (influenzata dalle vedute di Luigi Rossini), sia vedute raffiguranti singoli eventi significativi. Cfr. A. Petrucci, in D.B.I., II/p. 778, cita una raccolta di 30 rami uscita nel 1838 e aggiunge: "L'Amici, nel basso vedutismo romano succeduto alla grande era vasiana e piranesiana, fu tra quelli che mostrarono maggiori ambizioni", prendendo a modello il contemporaneo Luigi Rossini; Fossati-Bellani cita un esemplare con 24 tavole; la Raccolta Bertarelli (F 86, p. 516), cita una raccolta con la data del 1832, ma senza indicare il n. delle tavole (che elenca, assieme ad altre dell'Amici, nell'Indice dei pittori, disegnatori ed incisori); la vendita della Kissner Collection (Christie's 1990) descrive un ex. composto da 3 parti in 1 vol. con 83 tavole pubblicate tra il 1837 e il l847.

Le vedute del nostro album (oltre al frontespizio) raffigurano 11 Fontane, 11 Obelischi e 5 Chiostri); esse sono per lo più assai animate, con cittadini a passeggio e piccole scene popolari, a fianco di ragguardevoli monumenti. Domenico Amici (1808-dopo 1871) fu prolifico incisore romano, e pubblicò sia raccolte come la presente (influenzata dalle vedute di Luigi Rossini), sia vedute raffiguranti singoli eventi significativi. Cfr. A. Petrucci, in D.B.I., II/p. 778, cita una raccolta di 30 rami uscita nel 1838 e aggiunge: "L'Amici, nel basso vedutismo romano succeduto alla grande era vasiana e piranesiana, fu tra quelli che mostrarono maggiori ambizioni", prendendo a modello il contemporaneo Luigi Rossini; Fossati-Bellani cita un esemplare con 24 tavole; la Raccolta Bertarelli (F 86, p. 516), cita una raccolta con la data del 1832, ma senza indicare il n. delle tavole (che elenca, assieme ad altre dell'Amici, nell'Indice dei pittori, disegnatori ed incisori); la vendita della Kissner Collection (Christie's 1990) descrive un ex. composto da 3 parti in 1 vol. con 83 tavole pubblicate tra il 1837 e il l847.
