Poco dopo la laurea, le fu diagnosticato un tumore cerebrale che le causò un grave danno alla vista. La malattia la costrinse ad abbandonare la sua aspirazione a diventare una pittrice professionista. Nel corso di un decennio di recupero dalla malattia, un giorno scoprì che la macchina fotografica poteva essere una sorta di sostituzione per i suoi occhi, quindi iniziò a imparare a fotografare da sola nel suo letto d'ospedale. L'ossessione di Anrakuji per il corpo umano è il risultato, in parte, dei lunghi periodi trascorsi in ospedale.
