In good condition, lightly aged, laid down on part of leaf from album, with the reverse carrying part of the frank to a letter from another unidentified individual, with free postmark from 1826. Byron's frank has the customary red-ink postmark at top right ('FREE | 8 DE 8 | 18…26'), and is laid out by him in the customary fashion: 'Portsmouth December Seven | 1826 | The Honble. Mrs. Collingwood | Hawkhurst | Kent'. Byron's signature 'Byron.', at bottom left, is only underlined, and not enclosed within the two parallel lines as required. There is a naval connection between Byron and the addressee. Collingwood House was bought by the celebrated Admiral (of Trafalgar fame) in 1816 for his daughter and her husband George Newnham. It was later the residence of astronomer Sir John Herschel.

The Blonde was captained by George Anson Byron, 7th Lord Byron and the cousin of the poet. The crew included the botanist James Macrae, the naturalist Andrew Bloxam and the artist Robert Dampier. The ship's party visited a volcano and the place of death of Captain Cook, and the royal tomb. from which they took "almost all that remained of the ancient deities of the Islands". The book was compiled by Maria Graham, another cousin of Captain Byron, from the records of the ship's chaplain Richard Bloxam. The account of Anson's circumnavigation of the world is considered a "masterpiece of descriptive travel" and was the "most popular book of maritime adventure of the eighteenth century" (Hill). Anson's voyage inspired many British explorations in the Pacific, including that of Captain Cook. Anson's trip was strictly a military enterprise, though, its intent to disrupt Spanish commerce. At the beginning of a war with Spain, Anson's eight ships started out with the intention of harassing the Spanish on the west coast of South America. Seven ships were lost around Cape Horn, leading to the deaths of 600 out of 900 men. While the expedition was mostly a disaster, they did capture the Manila Galleon near China so that Anson and the surviving members of his crew reached England much richer.

This is the official account of Anson's adventurous and troubled four-year circumnavigation of the globe. In 1740 England was at war with Spain and equipped six warships and two merchant vessels with 1900 men, many of whom were untrained and unprepared for such a voyage, under the command of Commodore George Anson to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America, thus cutting off Spanish supplies from the Pacific Area. From the outset the voyage was fraught with problems, sickness and deaths among the crew, attacks by Spanish ships that had received word of the expedition, storms, flawed navigation charts, mutinies, but also with the successful capture of a Spanish galleon off the coast of the Philippines which yielded an immense treasure of over 34 tons of silver. After a brief pause in Canton, Anson started his voyage back to England in December 1743, rounding the Cape of Good Hope in April and arriving in England in June 1744, where he was richly rewarded for the capture of such a lavish treasure. Although several private journals of the voyage had been published, the official version of events was published in London 1748, as "A Voyage Round the World.". It was a great popular and commercial success and a 5th edition was already in print by 1749. As well as detailing the adventures of the expedition, it contained a huge amount of useful information for future navigators and with 42 detailed charts and engravings, most based on drawings by Capt. Piercy Brett, it laid the basis for later scientific and survey expeditions by Captain Cook and others. The final words from the authorized account are: «Thus was this expedition finished, when it had lasted three years and nine months, after having, by its event, strongly evinced this important truth: That though prudence, intrepidity, and perseverance united are not exempted from the blows of adverse fortune, yet in a long series of transactions they usually rise superior to its power, and in the end rarely fail of proving successful.».
