Aggiungi al carrello3 vols. Folio (ca. 300 x 420 mm). 233 (instead of 236) ff. 260 ff. 275 (instead of 276) ff. Two columns, 68 lines and headline. Rubricated throughout, with 1 smaller blue initial with white tracery on burnished and goffered gold ground and 2 (instead of 3) large burnished and goffered gold initials on mauve ground with white tracery, as well as numerous red and blue Lombardic initials. Contemporary Gothic blind-tooled leather binding by the so-called 'Münzer master' over heavy wooden boards, vols. 1 and 3 preserving the original 10-piece brass boss fittings at corners and centre of both covers. Editio princeps of Antoninus's monumental world chronicle, presented through a series of examples of righteous living, here preserved as an uncommonly wide-margined three-volume set in robust contemporary bindings. Issued by Anton Koberger, one of the first printers of Nuremberg and probably the most important printer-publisher of his time, the set offers the text in its defining incunabular form. - Antoninus arranges universal history from the Creation to the author's own age, transforming the chronicle tradition into a moral and providential reading of the past. For the later fifteenth century it also preserves testimony of particular value, drawing near to events and intellectual currents contemporary with the author. A Dominican reformer and Archbishop of Florence, Antoninus wrote with the practical and pastoral concerns that also informed his famous theological works. The chronicle stands within the same programme of instruction, presenting history not merely as record but also as exemplum. - Printed at the height of Koberger's press, this edition belongs to the great Nuremberg folios that defined the ambition of German incunabular production. Its ample format, double-column setting, and survival in its first binding places it squarely within the most desirable stratum of fifteenth-century ecclesiastical printing. While some two hundred copies (in varying degrees of completeness) survive in institutional collections, only six other sets can be traced in the international trade of the last century, all but one in later bindings. The only example in a Gothic binding recently in private hands was that from St. Peter's Monastery at Salzburg, sold during the Great Depression: through Maggs, it was acquired by Phyllis Goodhart Gordan in 1931 and now rests in Bryn Mawr's Special Collections. The present large set, formerly in Hall in Tyrol, is the only one that can compete with the Salzburg copy for its authentic appearance: in spite of a few missing pages, this remains a handsome, bibliographically substantial set, still conveying the weight, scale, and institutional presence with which the work first entered learned and monastic libraries. - Wants a total of 4 leaves: fols. 8-10 in the index of vol. 1 and fol. 122 in vol. 3. The large initial at the beginning of vol. 1 has been cut out, with loss to verso and traces of cuts in the following two leaves. Leaves 116-119 in vol. 3 are bound out of sequence, but present. Some light staining and wear; bindings professionally restored with spines rebacked; altogether a solid, well-preserved set in strictly contemporary bindings. - Several pages show marginal annotations by a 17th century reader. The set was formerly in the parish church of St Nicholas in Hall (Tyrol), Fieger endowment, with a 17th century handwritten ownership "BHalae" to the first page. St Nicholas is known to have deaccessioned numerous books from its library in the early 19th century (between 1838 and 1843, dozens of incunabula and manuscripts were sold to Wilten Abbey in Innsbruck). Early 20th century British collation notes to pastedowns. - HC 1159. Goff A-778. GW 2072. BMC II, 426. BSB-Ink A-563. Proctor 2040. ISTC ia00778000. - For the binding see Schunke, Schwenke-Sammlung, vol. I, p. 64 (Blattwerk no. 670), p. 159 (Laubstab no. 42), p. 258 (Rosette no. 220a), etc.; vol. II, p. 204, describing the binder, who handled a large part of Hieronymus Münzer's library, as one of the foremost masters in Nuremberg during the Koberger era.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. A late 15th century edition of Florentinus' Summa Theologica, his magnum opus on moral philosophy, clearly influenced by the Summma Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. This is the third volume of five. On Florentinus, he was born Antonio Pierozzi in Florence of the year 1389 and entered the Dominican Order in 1405 at the young age of 16. From 1433-1446, he served as vicar of the congregation, and became Archbishop of Florence, at the behest of Pope Eugene. His acts of kindness and self-sacrifice won the esteem and love of his people, especially when Florence was struck and plague and earthquake in 1448 and 1453. After his death, he was later canonized by Pope Adrian VI. There are a few biographical annotations on the author to the title page, and an early ownership inscription, dated 1630. The final blank is lacking. The finely has been neatly rebound in full leather, with blind tooling to match the period of printing. One finely bound volume in folio, 311 of 312 leaves This volume is in very good shape, with minimal rubbing or wear to the binding. There is some browning, and occasional light foxing throughout. There is a bit of marginal worming and damp staining to the first and last handful of leaves.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. A late 15th century edition of Florentinus's Confessionale, being the author's most famous text. The work serves as a guide for priests on how to hear confession. Interesting For medieval social history, the division of confessors into professional classes such as doctors, merchants, butchers, goldsmiths, actors, vain women, etc. is irrelevant. Also added is Chrysostom's Sermon on Repentance, as well as de Hassia's Rules for knowing the difference between mortal and venial sin. This edition is also the second imprint from the Albrecht printing house Kunnes, the first printer from Memmingen. The first blank is lacking. The work is textually complete. One volume in quarto, 95 of 96 leaves This volume is in very good shape, with minimal rubbing or wear to the binding. There is some marginal staining throughout.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Good. 4to. ff. [20]. Gothic letter, 1:110G. Initials and paragraph marks supplied in red ink (now oxidised into silver). First and last verso dusty, long clean tear (repaired) to lower edge of fol.6, touching couple of letters, faint small water stain to upper margin of last few ll., tiny scattered worm holes at lower blank gutter repaired. A very good, wide-margined copy in modern limp vellum. The fourth incunable edition of this important theological work concerning indulgences. Antoninus Florentinus (1389-1459) was Dominican Archbishop of Florence and author of influential works on moral theology. He advised the Pope during the Council of Florence (1431-49). Decisio is devoted to the pardon, in the form of indulgences, enacted for the fourth Jubilee of Indulgences, in 1450, known as the Golden Year . Princes from all over Europe and tens of thousands of pilgrims visited Rome in that year. Pope Nicholas V gave his solemn blessing every Sunday, and when the crisis [caused by the huge crowds] became more pressing, he proclaimed an edict that pilgrims would gain the Jubilee Indulgence by making a good confession and visiting the Basilicas in just three days (O Gorman, p.35). It was one of the most successful medieval Jubilees, and Nicholas V revived the indulgence in 1455 for those who had not been able to visit Rome in 1450. Decisio examines in detail all the technicalities of indulgencies: e.g, whether an indulgence enacted by a living person may apply to a dead person and remove them from Purgatory (a recently codified concept) or from mortal sin; what is the nature of an indulgence and its theological principles; the equivalence between days of indulgence and days of penitence; whether an indulgence may expire after the death of the religious who granted it; regulations concerning visits to specific places to obtain an indulgence; plenary indulgence earned fighting against the Ottomans; who can grant an indulgence and how to interpret the instructions provided in papal bulls in this matter; types of remission of sins, etc. The final few ll. focus on the 1450 Jubilee indulgence, which followed Clement VI s regulations. An interesting and curious work of theology and ecclesiastical policy. Only LC copy recorded in the US. Goff A864; GW 2180; ISTC ia00864000. E. O Gorman, Towards the Great Millennium Jubilee (1998).

Rubricated chapter headings, initials and paragraph marks. Very occasional little marginal spot or finger mark. An excellent copy, on very high-quality, ultra-fine vellum, in C19 French morocco, covers gilt to a C16 style, marbled eps, vellum flyleaves, marbled edges. Couple of c.1500 ms annotations. Exceptionally neat and clean ms of this major canon law treatise dealing especially with excommunication, in an unusual pocket-size format for easy carrying and consultation. Antoninus Florentinus (1389-1459) was a Dominican writer of moral theology. He advised the Pope during the Council of Florence (1431-49) and became an important authority in the C15 and C16, especially after his works reached the press. He was appointed Archbishop of Florence in 1446, which sets a terminus post quem for this ms, where he is thus identified. The handwriting style, more influenced by the Gothic than humanist script, indicates a date of composition potentially within the author s lifetime and before the first printed ed. of c.1475, from which this ms text differs in some details. Part of Antoninus huge Summa Theologica , De censuris ecclesiasticis discusses excommunication beginning with its meaning the exclusion from communion and types: major (or anathema), minor and a deo , with a focus on clerics, as well as the difference between suspension and interdict. Each section is devoted to specific cases which may warrant excommunication, e.g., heresy, theft from and the desecration of holy places, bigamy, inquisitors who end up believing heretics, those who use violence to obtain an absolution, or divulge confidential issues concerning the election of a pope, those who enter monasteries unauthorised, or marry a spouse within the kinship degrees prohibited by canon law, and dozens of others. Especially interesting are the sections on the forgery of apostolic letters or the revision of papal documents without authorisation. The treatise also considers the cases where absolution may be granted by the pope alone. This little ms was still being used for reference c.1500, when a canonist added a couple of glosses to the first section, on those who assault or attack ecclesiastical figures. A most handsome, unusually fine and clean C15 legal ms. Provenance: Sotheby s, Western Manuscripts and Miniatures, 1987, lot 81 (Buyer: Thomas).
