Sein Lehrbuch Die Krankheiten des Auges für practische Ärzte (3 Bde., 1851-56) galt weltweit als Standardwerk. Er beschrieb als erster verschiedene Krankheitsbilder und entdeckte die sagittale Verlängerung des Augapfels als Ursache der Kurzsichtigkeit. Er führte neue Operationsmethoden bei der Augapfelentfernung, bei Lidverwachsungen und bei der Entfernung der Linse ein; entwickelte neue Spezialoperationsbestecke für die Augenheilkunde.
