With pictures reconstructing what is thought to be the physical realities of these villages, and with numerous photographs of the archaeological digs and the vast amount of objects found, the book gives a clear picture of the lifestyle of the prehistoric people who lived in the area. It is evident that these people, living upon raised platforms and rises, amidst the waters and peat bogs as they did created a unique environment; but they were sophisticated, and had a finely developed sense of decorative style, as evidenced in the found objets. Archaeologists from Somerset County Council's Heritage Service have been excavating the site more than 100 years after its original discovery and excavation by the author of this book Arthur Bullied and Harold St George-Gray. Recent excavations have revealed a fantastic wealth of wooden structures, including the walls and floors of roundhouses and complex revetments forming the edge of the village. No other prehistoric site in England has this amazing level of preservation, with the timbers surviving because of the waterlogged peat and clay surrounding them, keeping out oxygen and preventing decay. Samples of wood will be used for tree-ring and radiocarbon dating to solve the problem of when and for how long, the village was occupied. Ref LL4.
