Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a delightful and accessible collection of jokes and stories, many dating back centuries. The author has traced them to their origins, revealing the tradition of storytelling in an era when humor served as social commentary. Many of these tales were created by monks who saw making people laugh as a virtue equal to prayer, so throughout this entertaining compendium, readers are treated to a variety of stories â" some familiar, some obscure â" for every occasion. Arranged by theme, they cover everything from puns and roistering tales of monks, soldiers, and sailors, to anecdotes about Irishmen, Scotsmen, and Jews. The stories are complemented by poems and verses, often with a bawdy and satirical twist. Not only a rich source of humor, this book provides a fascinating glimpse into the social history of the past, showing us what made people laugh over the course of several centuries. And the universality of the humor ensures you will find yourself laughing along too. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Hardback. Condizione: G++. No DW. 1st Edition. Blue hardback lettered in black. Damp mark to spine. Quite heavily cocked. Otherwise quite clean tight copy.

PAP. Condizione: New. New Book. Shipped from UK. THIS BOOK IS PRINTED ON DEMAND. Established seller since 2000.

First edition. Blue boards stamped in blind, spine and front cover lettered in black, Fry's Cocoa symbol stamped on rear cover. Small repair to head of spine, paper browned, a clean very good copy in a slightly worn pictorial dust jacket, wear along folds, and splitting along folds internally repaired with clear tape. Quite an attractive copy. Short jokes and tales told at an inn, some told by the ghosts of monks from the ancient monastery upon which the inn is built. At least two bindings exist, as described by George Locke in Spectrum of Fantasy III. This is identical to his variety (a), save for the Fry's Cocoa ad on the back and the front cover decorations being in blind, while in his copy they are in black. It sounds like Locke's binding (b), buff cloth lettered in red & black, is likely the primary binding. Not so common in the dust jacket.…
