The map extends from the Caspian Sea in the west, to Manchura in the east; and from "Kolhyvan" (Western Siberia) in the north to Tibet in the South. It charts a region then largely mysterious to Western cartographers and a frontier for geopolitical ambitions: a caption north of the Kailash range reads "Unknown parts of Greater Tibet".

We see herdsmen with flocks of sheep and herds of horses and cattle, and caravans headed east. Known to be nomadic, the nations listed, such as Scythian, Parthian and Sogdians must have put down roots some place at some point in order to produce the fine jewelry and other ornamentation for which they are known.The Himalayas and northern India run across the bottom of the map. The upper right quadrant is embellished by an elegant title cartouche with flourishes of cornucopia. The fanciful monster in the Caspian Sea could well be a factual depiction of an enormous sturgeon whose endangered descendants yet inhabit this sea, producing another type of black gold caviar.Condition: This map is in B condition with toning around the borders, foxing, and some small rust spots. Included in the map are the isla…nds of Cyprus, Crete, Rhodes and cities such as Antioch, Troy, Constantinople and Smyrna (modern Izmir). The region has been home to countless civilizations throughout history from theancient Paleolithic Era, and some of the earliest known permanent settlements have been found in Anatollia. Empires dating to myriad eras have grown and declined in the region including ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman, to name a few.Following the conquest of Constantinople by Fatih Mehmet in 1453, the Ottoman Empire increased its power and domain, reaching its apex under the rule of Suleyman the Magnificent in the sixteenth century, when the Empire was one of the most powerful states in the world.At its height the Ottoman Empire includedmost of southeastern Europe, as far as the gates of Vienna. It included present-day Hungary, the Balkans and Greeceand parts ofmodern-day Ukraine. Egypt and much of North Africa including Algeria were controlled by the Ottomans, as was the Arabian Peninsula. In the Middle East it included portions of regions now occupied bySyria, Iraq, Israel and Iran.The map appears to be based on the 1634 Blaeu map of the same territories. It was published almost two hundred years after the conquest of Byzantium, when the decline of the Ottoman Empire was already underway. Over the centuries the power of the Empire would increasingly decline until finally being replaced in the 20th century when Ataturk led the movement that resulted in the founding of the Turkish Republic.Embellishment includes a title cartouche with two cherubs, vignettes of ships at full sail on the sea, a battle at sea, and some friendly sea monsters. A distance scale showing German miles is in the lower right corner of the map.Condition: Map is inB condition with a fine impression, lovely color and full margins. Some offsetting is apparent as a result of the original coloring. The Himalayas and northern India form the southern border of the map. Lands of… the fabled Scythians, nomads of the steppes and farther abroad - known for their prowess as master horsemen and master artisans of gold - are featured in this map.The map includes ancient names of peoples, places and kingdoms. Culturally advanced, the Scythians dominated a vast region of southern Russia and the Crimea. As their numbers and influence grew an elite Scythian upper class evolved from which their sovereign arose. The throne was hereditary, passing to the eldest son on death of the monarch. This class of aristocrats left elaborate graves commonly known as kurgans throughout the region inhabited by them, filled with remarkably stunningly beautiful gold jewelry and other sophisticated ornamental objects of gold. The military might of the Scythians was such that they were able to repel an invasion by Darius I of Persia in about 513 BCE.Though Gerard Mercator is best known for the projection which bears his name, he was the first to use the name Atlas for a collection of maps, and he devoted much of his life to his maps based on the work of Ptolemy. In the north the long-believed existence of the Northeast Passage is revealed as the land mass Nova Zembla is mapped with no east coast and a clear passage is shown to exist to the Anian Straight that opens to the Pacific.Korea is featured as an island just west of the abnormally shaped Japan. The Great Wall of Chinacan be found separating China from the Mongolians of Tartaria. The Spice Islands are depicted with mostof the north and west coasts mapped in detail while many of the south and eastern coasts are blank. This shows the extent of Dutch cartographic knowledge and their areas of occupation during the mid-17th century spice trade.Several indigenous animals are scattered throughout the map including an elephant just north of a large lake that was believed to be the source of the Ganges, when in actuality it was the Himalayas that had yet to be seen by European eyes.
